sorry for a "what car" thread, i do try to aviod posting them but i am genuinly at a loss of what to chose or even take a look at!

Basic outline:

I do a 30mile work trip a day, i own a Monaro for fun and a defender for Farm use. Nither car is suitable for the commute. At the moment i own a Fiat stilo for work but after destroying it for the 2nd year in a row(according to my recent MOT) its in the dying days of my ownership. My work place, ater a 14mile drive of A roads, turns onto a mile-ish of appaling lane. pot holes, grass growing in the middle and random rocks newly placed daily!
My new car needs to have a high ride hight(similer to a Rover streetwise), it needs to do 40mpg+. it needs to be a decent shopping car for the OH(unlike my defender) and needs to be usable as a A-road slugger to. budget is tight at 3.5k. I dont want a Jimny or similer mini 4x4 esc car, id like a jacked up normal car or a car that can take a HUGE amounts of underbody punishment. any ideas?

many thanks.

Hmm, 40mpg. You'd need a diesel for that, but I wouldn't buy an old diesel.

Outback 2.5. Newer model 53-on should appear in budget soon.

The Legacy Outback is the usual answer to this question, I believe.

I realise that this is slightly over budget, but not much - if you could find one slightly cheaper would it not do the trick?

Look into the repair costs. Parts can be shockingly expensive. Put me off.

Well you could get an early Audi A6 allroad 2.5 TDi Avant with a fairly high mileage!

I'm not going to say it will be cheap to run though!

yes

But you'll struggle to make 40mpg, mid 30s on a run no problem though. Forester also an option, bit more compact if you want a shorter car but not as nice inside.

I don't think they have a great deal in the way of under-body armour.

It looks like the Skoda Yeti had an options pack which added under-body armouring. They're apparently quite capable offroad.

Not sure about the price though, they're probably nowhere near that cheap yet. frown

4x4 Panda?
I’ve seen them bouncing round ski resorts for years so they can’t be all bad.

Alternatively, you could pick up an old Wrangler for that money.
Simple straight 6 engine, low maintenance.
Although you won’t see anywhere near 40mpg.

Seconded or thirded for the Panda 4x4 smile

XJ/Cherokee good daily drive but 30mpg average and the VM diesel has a dodgy rep.
