Vectra SRi, Clio 172 or Golf Gti?
Discussion
Local garage hass 3 potentials on the forecourt. I need a new car as Mrs Biscuit had an argument with an artic and lost, resulting in a writeoff.
Contenders are:
2005 Vectra 2.2 Sri Petrol. Silver. 100k. Full history (some main dealer). Full MOT. £1850
2002 Clio 172. Silver. 99k. Some history, full MOT. £1700
2001(X) Golf Gti. Green. 99k. Some history, full MOT, 18" RS6 wheels, dump valve, £1800
All of the above will suit the criteria we need - a primarily backup family car which I will use for a 15 mile per day commute. I am slightly put off the Golf by the fact its modified in that I dont know if its been thrashed or trashed by its previous owner. The Clio appeals for its sporting reputation, while the Vectra seems a practical choice.
Any thoughts please.

Three totally different cars there!
If you want a fun hot hatch, buy the Clio
If you want a comfortable family car, don't buy the Vectra, buy a Mondeo.
If you want a chavved up Golf that's no doubt been thrashed to hell and back, buy the Golf.
In fact, I wouldn't buy the Clio either, it seems like it's at the bottom of the pile of 1*2s, and is probably just as ropey as the Golf.
Look elsewhere for a nice Mondeo or Focus.

TBH mate, if your budget is £1700-1900, I'd be looking elsewhere for a reliable, second family/back-up car.
Look for something like an Accord, Avensis, Primera, Corolla, Civic etc that's been owned by a little old bloke from new. Sure, it won't set your pants on fire, but it will be safe, reliable and economical.
Or buy a big old Jag or BMW/Mercedes

Extensively drove a 172 cup a month or so ago....
f
king horrid car IMO..... Everyone says how well they drive but to me it didn't feel anything special...
After jumping out the S3, it had noticeably less grip, didn't feel any more engauging to drive, wasn't that quick etc.
Really depends what you opinion and standards are with your choices.

Agreed. Of the three cars in OP's opening post I wouldn't touch any of them. An Accord would be a great choice.Look for something like an Accord, Avensis, Primera, Corolla, Civic etc that's been owned by a little old bloke from new.
