Who to use for windscreen chip repair (not insurance)

Would like to have a chip on my windscreen fixed, and am wondering who to go through and who will do it properly at the best price (autoglass seem expensive and from the complaints I have seen, they do not always repair the crack properly).
I do not want to go through insurance as I do not want to risk it affecting at renewal time.
