I seem to be spending a lot of time trying to choose my next car which is suitable for our new, larger than expected, family.

My twins are 9 months now and we have just about coped with the Civic / MX5 combo - although our trip to Lyme Regis required a lot of stuff being transported by my inlaws!

I am just interested really what others with twins / large young families went for with the car choices?

We started with a Mazda 5 having two young children and an older daughter. However, we found that sitting in the 3rd row tended to alienate the 3rd child who couldn't join in conversations etc and the middle row wasn't wide enough. Also with the 3rd row set up, the luggage space was compromised.

So we bought a new Mondeo - fits 3 in the rear (baby seat for the 3 yr old, booster for the 6 year old and 11 year old daughter in the middle) and the hatch area is huge enough for bikes and scooters and pushchairs. We'd find it hard to replace for what Ford sold it to us for.

3 kids means the Mustang sees very little use at all and the old Golf only has a middle lap belt which is legal but not entirely satisfactory.

My neighbours have four kids, the third one was twins. Up to last year they drove a renault espace, but since the oldest has reached the age of no longer comming on all the trips my neighbour seized the opportunity to buy a 3 series touring.

From my own experience with one kid though, a focus-wagon sized car is somewhat of a minimum for dealing with young kids and their stuff.

Just bought a Sharan (expecting our third shortly).

It's not exciting, but it does its job very well indeed. The extra 2 seats at the back can be taken out to give aircraft-hanger levels of space and when the grandparents visit we no longer need to take out 2 cars.

Unless this is going to be your only car and can't bear something so un-PH I'd really consider one. You can always get somethign more "apprprriate" for the weekly commute. An old Jag, for instance!

We have 1 year old twins and a 4 year old daughter - current family bus is a Volvo XC90. Bought because it was able to take three car seats across the middle and had two decent seats in the boot. You can also put a pram in the boot while the rear seats are up.

I have 2 year old twins... Quite a surprise all that time ago... Anyway, what car did I have - A Subaru Impreza WRX PPP. What did I trade that in for a year later, an Impreza STi... I then got sick of them wiping crap all over the seats so bought a Mondeo for the kids, and Porsche Cayman S for me smile

A good friend of mine had twins, and survived with a MG ZS until the 3rd was due. He then finally relented and got a Picasso. It does exactly what it says on the tin, and I don't think he would be without it now.

The challenge is that it will be my daily driver too - I just can't see myself in a Picasso / Espace!

Is it wrong that I'm quite looking forward to having kids, so I can buy an original Fiat Multipla?!

rofl My mate at work had one. We called it the black pig. It is actually a great car inside. There is like an expanse of space around you.

With 3 kids and 2 dogs it had to be a people carrier, back in 1978 I should add. We bought a VW Sharan 1.8 20v Sport. looked great in silver with blacked out windows and large alloys and inside had Recaro type sports seats. On this model it was 6 seats as standard but we opted for the extra one to make 7.

The only pain was back then flexi seating hadn't been invented so the two rears often used to live under the dining room table.

A great car, quite good to drive and very fast, 150bhp of turbo to propel you rapidly along the roads of the Uk and Europe. Very reliable, the only repair was a new water pump at the 3yr service spotted by the dealer and replaced under warranty.

Kept it until 2006 when we swapped it for a Freelander.

I've edited it to show the real cause of needing a truck for carrying kids stuff.

I've got 3 year old twins and have an XC90. Ideal when they were babies due to the amount of stuff needed whenever we went away for a couple of days, particularly the pushchair, and easier to lift them in and out due to the height.

Now they're older they like being high up as they can see better and they can sit in the 3rd row so you can take friends/family with you.
