I just sold my car....what car now !

Afternoon all, I've just taken a deposit on my Mazda 6, very pleased ! Really good car but time to change as the girfriend is learning and need something smaller we can both drive.

So its my own what car thread - help me out PH !

Criteria :

- Focus size or smaller
- Returns around 55mpg extra urban or more
- Ideally below 70k miles if petrol, below 100k if diesel
- Within reasonable distance of KY11 4DS or G33 3PP (not my own postcodes...)
- Price no more than £2400 (after negotiating)
- Decent spec, no wind up windows !

I could go outside this (except price) for something like a 330d though.... And the girfriend will get a <£1000 runaround of her own...

So lets see what you can find

Could you explain why you have two different mileage criteria based on fuel type? Seems odd.

Diesel cars generally better for higher mileages, and generally more expensive too - so I can accomodate them within my budget. Also thinking about when its time to resell.

Honda Jazz 1.4? 55mpg, no so sure.

If we were posting this on a BBS system in 1989, sure.

But not now. You'll have injector/turbo issues with a modern diesel long before your petrol engine is playing up.

Obviously that rules out the likes of a Mondeo TDCi with its lovely DMF issues etc.

Other poster - an Astra 1.4 petrol will do that, as will a BMW 318 16v, well just about !

A BMW 318i with the 2.0 16v Valvetronic engine, aside from being a bit sheddy at £2.4k, won't do 55mpg.

If you genuinelly want to see 55mpg then you'll need to seek out something with VAG's 1.9 TDI engine in it as the least hassle way of doing this on your budget.

Will they, 55mpg? The 318 might be your answer so.

I got55mpg from a mates renault clio dci and that was a true 55mpg. I'm extremely sceptical of the mpgs other people say they get out of other vehicles after that...extremely.

I had a 1.9 E46 back in 2006/2007 and that would give me 55-56mpg on the trip computer doing Glasgow-Edinburgh, truer 49-50 if you drive foot off at 70mph, rather than foot on.

I have an M43 1.9 engine Spanish E46 and it does 45ish at 70 but real day-to-day average is 30-35.

I've had the BMW 2.0 16v engine in a compact and high 30s is the best you'll get.

VAG diesels will easily see 55+ on a run, that is the 1.9 105bhp in a golf for eg.
