Ever bought a bit of a shed for a few grand 'just because'?

Im tempted to go and buy an e46 320d, with about 140k on or something daft like that, just for the sake of it. I dont need a replacement car as such, but something appeals to me about buying a diesel car with loads of miles on for cheap. Im trawling ebay and AT at the moment but havn't seen anything close

I dont even know if i'd sell the ST, maybe just keep them both, i have no idea. I just like the shape of them too

Yep, bought a 3.0 X Type a few weeks ago. I'm not in need of a car as much now as I was (covering 10-15k pa rather than 30k pa) and petrol isn't getting any cheaper, so thought why not.

£1800, 240hp, V6, like taking your sofa out for the day.

This would make perfect sense if you'd decided you suddenly craved some sort of barge with a huge V8, or an ageing sports car or something.

But you actualy fancy a sheddy 2 litre diesel E46? It'll just be a pain in the arse and even when it works it'll be a capable tool rather than something a bit nice.

If you've a genuine need for a car like that buy a nice one and enjoy using it but sheddy diesels strike me as the best example of false economy in the universe.

All I own is sub £1k sheds really. The Saab 9000 with naughty boost levels is the most fun and comfortable...and cost the least at £155 tax'd and tested

I bought a 1983 Merc 380 SEC "just because". Unseen on ebay, stuck a bid in and a week later got an email saying "congratulations..."

Got a lift to Bristol and drove the old girl home, didn't miss a beat. Sold it about a month or so later and made a couple of hundred quid!

Er yeah, that constitutes my entire car buying philosophy! The last car I bought cos I needed it was in September 1999, when I bought my 1.3 Mk2 Astra, which I still have and is 200% reliable.
Ever purchase since has been cos I fancy it. Like my GTE which was an insane £175 6 years ago.

Yep I'd have one as a cheap run about. Alot of car for 5K at the moment.

Got my Toyota/lexus, Defender, Discovery, volvo etc all for less than a grand.

Amazing what you can pick up for pocket change in this country.

What's even more amazing is that people will scrap perfectly good cars such as my old volvo and go buy a new clio or some other awful French rubbish.

Essentially it's trading downwards and putting yourself in debt for the privilege.

I sold my mint 2000 S6 to replace it with a 17 year old 328i simpily because it was too good a deal to pass up.
An old chap at work had it for 14 years and he bought it from his friend who had it from new, I have every receipt/mot its ever had and its been meticulously maintained. He let me have it for £650 as the Bmw dealer he was looking to trade it to (he's bought a 3.0 Z4) said he would give him £200 for it. Its got the full Alpina kit including alloys and aside from a few spots of rust on the rear arches its in great nick, I don't miss the S6 one bit and can see myself keeping it for some time.
