there is a 1.9tdi r reg 98 with auto box

Auto on those should be fine. TDi engine will be more solid than the petrol - I've had two (AFN) at over 200k and they both still got over 50mpg daily.

An Audi beard might know specifically which boxes went in which cars but the Multitronic is a CVT, so it should be fairly obvious if its fitted when you drive it. They are bonkers-unreliable. I'd imagine the regular auto is fine, sadly at some point all the smaller engined ones seemed to end up with the Multitronic box instead.
