Woke up yesterday morning and came out my house to find this...
I'm seriously seriously gutted as I absolutely adore my car. No idea really what has caused it as it was fine when I parked it up outside my girlfriends house about 10pm Saturday night, and none of the neighbors had seen/heard anything until I found it sunday morning.
I checked for debris like bits of a brick or stone but there was nothing obvious. According to one of the guys down the road, a group of scrotes smashed a load of windows on cars a couple of years back one evening with a hammer. I can only speculate but that could well of happened to me, just surprising as we don't really come from a rough area. There is also no other damage to the car. I'm sort of thankful that I've only had to replace £150 worth of window, than have to have my car resprayed but its infuriating nonetheless.
To their credit, Autoglass came out really quickly yesterday to get everything weatherproofed and they attended first thing this morning to get a replacement pane fitted. Although they didn't have the black tinted glass in stock (and it was 4 times the price!) so I went with standard and I'll get it tinted later on.
Anyway just wanted to have a bit of a gas!

Strange - if someone was going to go down a street looking for a single car to vandalise, I doubt they'd pick a Fiat Punto. Can't think what else could have broken it, though.

I did think that but between the sea of grey Audi's and ford foci parked down the road, a bright red Abarth does stick out like a sore thumb.Sure you haven't upset anyone recently?
I hope not! Upsetting people isn't one of my life goals.
When I was about 10, a friend through a piece of pea gravel at another boy and it missed and hit an estate car's back window. It shattered as in the photo but there was no hole. As we hid and watched in horror a small hole developed and the little cubes of glass fell on the parcel shelf one by one.. For the hole to be as big as the photo took ages maybe half an hour.
It's not nice to find your property vandalised like that. Last week my brother heard a noise in the street and when he got up to look around, his 5 series had a large boot print in the bonnet with a few scratches. 5 other cars in the street had suffered similar damamge. He saw a drunk couple up the road and gave chase. He turned them into the police which is a big improvement to what he would have done to them 10 years ago. Nothing personal in this case, it was just they were drunk and thought it would be fun to run around on top of peoples cars.

I had an Audi A4 Avant once and the rear window on that just broke for no apparent reason. Car wasn't in a position where someone could have smashed it so it may just be bad luck.
That happened to an old Mini of mine. I shut the driver's door and walked off and about ten seconds later there was an almighty crash and the side window had spontaneously shattered.The most annoying thing was I was stupid enough to prod it from the outside then have to spend the next six months finding little bits of glass embedded in the driver's seat (in both senses of the word!).

Same thing happened to my sister's Fiesta a couple of years ago. Found it with the back window smashed one morning. No other damage, no bit of brick in the car or anything, and nothing done to any other cars on the street.
While random mindless vandalism was still the most likely cause, I can't help but wonder if it wasn't a stress thing, or a stone thrown up from a passing vehicle. The glass wasn't put through like the OPs, just shattered.

Might sound weird but I'm thinking about the weather we've been having recently; it's been intermittent bright sun and then some cool periods with rain. Just wondering, as it's tinted glass it might get fairly warm in the sun (heat absorption and all that) which could then be cooled suddenly in the rain. Perhaps some sort of heat-shock?
If I read this again it's going to say it happened at night isn't it?
