I just read that the Road Safety Foundation has advised that Britain's Motorways are not safe enough to bring in the Government's proposed 80 mph speed limit on (most) Motorways.
To counter their viewpoint, I was just wondering if there were any suscribers who knew anyone, who when possible* tends to drive much nearer to 100mph, but who hasn't had an accident for over 10 years.
I just wondered if 80mph is deemed unsafe by an advisory organsation, do all these drivers who seem to be travelling at what must be 90-100 mph, have frequent road accidents? If not why not?

- On Motorways, where visibility is good and where distances from the car ahead exceeds the braking distance.
Somebody once said to me that Britains motorways were designed to accommodate vehicles travelling up to 150mph, hence the long sweepy bends and general 'wideness' of the road itself. No idea if this is true or not.
I myself stick to the speed limit and would never exceed it.

However, on the de-restricted Autobahn in Germany (when you find a bit that is quite and free of traffic) you can legally travel as fast as your car will go on a mere two lanes of carriageway.
Make of that what you will.

You'd need a massive statistical sample to draw any meaningful conclusions from; a few examples wouldn't prove anything.
Also the quality of the data will be unreliable as people on the internet tend to lie and/or won't be stupid enough to admit to breaking the law.Although I myself only dip below 100mph to pick up hookers, refuel and park. Zero accidents in the last ten years despite being both drunk and on the phone.

I think busybodies should stop interfering and let people do whatever speed they feel is suitable. They'd probably find that after an initial flurry of test pilots and PHers out VMaxing, most cars would settle into an 80-90mph cruise.

OP - you have to remember we're all driving gods, and could probably negotiate the average busy city cross roads at 100mph+. There are however people in the real world without our god given talent, who probably can't control a vehicle at 100mph.

The motorways are much faster at night. I remember sitting in the passenger seat of my brother's Renault 5 doing about 130-ish on the M4 at 4 in the morning one night, would have been mid-1990's, and being overtaken by an Audi doing at least 150mph. The driver clearly found it easier to straddle the dashed line between lanes 2 and 3 rather than try to stick in any one lane.You ddon't tend to expect to be overtaken when you're doing 130 in the UK but that guy blew us into the weeds.

You ddon't tend to expect to be overtaken when you're doing 130 in the UK but that guy blew us into the weeds.

So you say we already drive at 80mph now anyway, so I guess the motorways are a wash with the bloody mess of all the people who went over the 70mph speed limit since its so dangerous to travel that fast.....Exactly the same as they do now, ironically.

40 x 56 is rather a lot more than 1 x 100
Its a good job the police dont know the speeds reached out on the roads. I can come up a motorway ramp & in 20 secs hit 200mph its that simple but would i do it

The limit will stay at 70. too many do gooders im afraid. Im old enough to remember it starting, in 1967 most cars could not reach it given 5 miles
. I had a fast car at the time & felt my human rights had been violated but it wont change im sure.
