mini cooper vrs cooper s

apologies, the search function is down.
£6k budget, looking for a cooper s, and been to see a few which are a bit rough, eg:
scruffy interior / exterior
missing service history
it's for my partner, so i reluctantly considered 'downgrading' the search to a cooper, however they seem to be a similar price.
i know they're very popular, but is finding a decent one at this budget impossible, and, supercharger / bonnet vent / tailpipes aside, are there any other differences between the two?
kind of figured that insurance and mpg explains the cooper appearing relatively expensive compared to its s stablemate.

Correct. For £6k, and talk of superchargers, OP is looking at R53s. I'm surprised you can't find a tidy Cooper S for that price though OP, they've really dropped in value these days.
I'm biased. But I'd be looking for a decent Clio 197 Cup for this much. You'd get much more bang for your buck.Defcon5 said:

it's the hatchback cooper s i'm interested in..thanks for the same engine, diff car suggestion, but being a she, that's not really an option!
if someone does have a mint supercharged hatchback < 60k miles in budget a subtle nudge in the right direction would be appreciated....colour, price etc would narrow my search..

R53 is the original BMW Cooper S with a supercharger. It has a Chrysler sourced engine thats easy to tune for power, but has a bit of a drink problem. The R56 is the next generation BMW Cooper S, with the BMW/Peugot joint venture turbo engine. Great power/torque, pretty tuneable, but much better fuel consumption. Much newer car, expect to pay 10-15k.

r53, nothing we've looked at is much newer than 04 reg.
most colours considered.
less than 60k miles preferred.
not tired condition, i'm realistic though, it's £5odd k after all.
full service history, due to the servicing pattern, lots seem to miss the insp 2, the more costly one.

We picked up a 2005 MCS with 28k miles last month for £6k. It's a bit light on options but has everything we need, and I spent £150 on a Pioneer head unit with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. It's black with a silver roof and bonnet stripes, and nice spider spoke wheels.r53, nothing we've looked at is much newer than 04 reg.

Yes, the head gasket went on the journey home from picking it up but we don't talk about that. It's all sorted now.
You should be able to get a face-lifted (2005) R53 for your budget easily. I'm not sure of the specifics of the face-lift but they are 170bhp rather than 160bhp, better Xenon's, slightly better interior apparently.
Most importantly, they are a lot of fun.
