Yes indeed.

If there is an upside to the stupidly high cost of fuel, then surely it must be the ferrous-dirigible depreciation of horrendous gas guzzlers such as this:

Furthermore, haggle the vendor down to about £33,600, hand the thing, along with £1400 to these nice chaps:

And you have yourself a £35k, 820bhp, ~220mph supercar, that will attract very little attention from anyone not in the know, and is very practical to (literally) boot.

Does anyone else have anything better?* Otherwise, I think I may have found my next target car.

RS6 needs a surprisingly high power to accelerate as you might expect.

Comparing with Japanese porcelain racehorses like a GTR for example.

I tried both before getting the latter.

Er, Just wondering how you get that figure? The car is 570ish standard, the remap gives +70ps. So that makes 640ish?

And it says the stage 3 is 'specific tune for modifications (larger turbos,injectors or supercharger)' so you need supporting mods.

Yes, looking again, I have made the (silly) assumption that the "Stage 3" kit is the 800+ bhp one. How much does it cost then - couldn't see a price on the site?

All the same, even the stage 1 tune for £800, giving 650bhp still makes the point, as the main bit is about how massively cheap this sort of poweeeeer comes these days. Yes I know the A6 is a weighty old barge, but still...

The porcelain racehorse comment was more directed at yer R32-34 Skylines and Supras 'tuned' to four figures than the current GTR, but they ain't as practical as an RS6. It gives me hope for a couple of years' time when I finally have to admit that the XKR will no longer be a suitable family car...

There are lots of fast options about but 800+ reliable bhp for ~30 grand is a dream I think. Either it'll cost a lot more than that or it'll go bang on a regular basis no matter which car/engine you start with.

Ninja packing skills have so far rendered the XKR practical for a two-week family camping trip, but three-up with luggage in an M12 might be pushing it a tadge, lovely though they are...

I like this alot. It has very understated styling (everything is relative!). I would de-badge and go round biffing up heroes in A4s at the traffic lights - with the optional extra labrador peering out of the back window at them.

It's fantastic, really Jekyll and Hyde - devastatingly quick cross country when you want it to be, superbly relaxed cruiser when not. People think it'd cost about £40k too... That's the newer ally-bodied one by the way, can't speak for the steel one.

Be warned - the 'family car' thing only works if you're a shortarse with stumpy legs like me and have a borderline petrolhead wife.

You're still marginal, and it'll depend on your proportions if you want to have a little'un in the back. I'm also 5'8" but also only 9.5 stone and a short trouser length (ahem). Wife is 5'6" but with longer legs than me and couldn't drive it in the position we needed the seat in to accommodate the rear facer.
