I know its French, I know it'll be worth 30p at 11.30 tomorrow but it's cheap and it's close.

Can it be that bad a car, looks alright and has loads of gizmos.

Come on, shoot down my Speckled Jim and tell me it's awfull.

Theres's some decent estates on that site for the same money, buy one of those. Any of them except that Renault. Saab 93 and Subaru look good.

I can only echo the previous posters... why would you even consider doing that to yourself?

Try self flagellation or humping a pint glass full of razor blades and sarsons. Either is a more pleasant, less painful proposition.

My father in law has a 58 plate hatchback one of those.

It's a perfectly decent car, I have no clue why that one is attracting such derision, perhaps prior posters have a far more comprehensive knowledge of the car than I do - perhaps they have given the model a proper, exhaustive test.

Or perhaps they haven't.

I have the same engine and spec in Laguna coupe form. Would happily swap for that estate now we are three.

The engine is a joint effort with Nissan and nothing has gone wrong in the 20000 miles I've had it. Interior trim is a bit rattly in places which is a shame as the materials and design are excellent.

GT spec gets you loads of spec as you say. Great value.

Well I like the look of that but would be wary of buying one for no reason other than Internet opinion on how badly renault make cars!

Cheap? Nearly £8k for a 4 yr old Renault which will probably cost you a small fortune in repairs. Would be looking at an Accord 2.2CDti, Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 140 or Avensis T180 2.2D4D if you must have 180bhp.

Budget: £450 a month car allowance from work, don't have to spend the full amount as repairs, insurance, tax etc will be down to me, I get a fuel card (Diesel or Petrol).

Requirements: Estate (would get away with a 4X4) no older than 2007. Must be manual as Mrs Plumber won't entertain an Auto.

I like the level of spec and am attracted to the shiny bits like the shallow Magpie that I am, it shouldn't costly to run or insure and its nice and local and the dealer looks ok.

I had a MKII Laguna Estate on that 24 hour (4 days) thing Renault were doing a few years ago and ot was nice and comfy and I liked it.

How do Citroen C5 Tourers strike you and fit in with the budget? The higher-end models catch my eye (when I actually see one), can be had with a V6 diesel too...

Years back when these cmae out Renault did a deal with Avis to give you a 48 hour test drive. I did one.

It was absolutely dire. Cheap, nasty, horrible to drive. It actually went wrong on me so I took it to the local Avis who didnt have another one and swapped it for a Mondeo which was basically loads better.

The answer to your requirements has to be a Passat estate, surely?

I'm not sure what question other than 'whats the poorest value way to buy a completely dull car' is answered with a Passat. Heck buy a Mondeo, at least the dull-ness is cancelled out to some degree by the suprising addition of a chassis far more competent than you'd need in such a car.
