Fair price for swapping a tyre over from wheel to wheel

As above, i have a spare on at the moment (wheel bought minus tyre when original was damaged), and have just picked up a second hand alloy.

I reckon on about £10 to include new valve if needed and balancing.

£5 to swap tyre
£5 to balance new tyre
£1 for new valve
£1.50 for old tyre disposal

£12.50 total

Last time I had the tyres changed on the Lotus, they did all four for "stick a couple of quid in the tips jar".

Last time i had mine changed i spent 15 mins arguing with the fitter as he wanted no money! Ended up leaving a tenner on the office table and repeat business from me

I asked a local indy garage (not a dedicated tyre fitter but he has the kit) to take off and reseat a tyre to fix a slow leak. He did the lot for a fiver. I would've been happy to give him more.

Pid £13 at well know speedy high street out fit. Cheeky fkers put nitrogen in the tyre instead of air! £1.50 for fk all benefit to me!

Funny that as you get Nitrogen in your tyres anyway just using 'normal' compressed air, but only 78%. Not sure it's worth paying extra for the other 22%.

Depends on the nature and duration of your relationship with the place and people IME. Early on a local place used to charge £10 per corner and I'd get an invoice, the most was £50 to demount a set of tyres from one set of alloys and refit them to a different set and dispose of the old alloys which I thought reasonable as it took one guy 45 mins or so.

I've since used them for a lot of bits and bobs over the last few years and if someone who recognises me is working there, they'll do it in their "lunchbreak" (which just happens to coincide with 5 mins after my arrival) and not charge me for it, so I'll bung them a tip for doing me a favour and recommend them to people asking where to go for work.

Otherwise I'll just pay the going rate as above and never arrive expecting to get anything done for free or ask for it.

i thought most reputable tyre fitters would not put anything but a brand new tyre supplied by themselves onto a rim these days

No, you just don't give them any warranty at all. Give the tyre a quick once over before and as long as it's legal and not damaged then it's the customers problem.

I think it's because Nitrogen from a cylinder is "dry" whereas using normal atmospheric air will be humid, and it's this which makes the difference when the tyre heats up. The humid air tends to expand more, and the dry air less. So filling with Nitrogen from a bottle should maintain more consistent pressure independant of temperature.

If they use a proper moisture trap then there shouldn't be an issue, but even so apart from driving Gods I don't imagine most of us would be able to tell the difference anyway.
