Mobile cranes on mways in rush hour
Discussion
Why do there seem to be so many of these mobile "chicranes" on the M62.
Saw three today causing some nice tailbacks and two going the other way. Surely given they manage to drive at c30mph then it'd make more sense if they trundled to where they're going overnight rather than causing some hefty tailbacks.
Seeing one is a pretty regular occurrence so is it some sort of conspiracy to clog up the motorways?

God yes, and cylists - why don't they only travel at night too?Saw three today causing some nice tailbacks and two going the other way. Surely given they manage to drive at c30mph then it'd make more sense if they trundled to where they're going overnight rather than causing some hefty tailbacks.

And horses.
And everyone except you.

In fairness LoonR1 has a point - moving a huge mobile crane at 40mph up a highly busy motorway at rush hour is pretty inconsiderate of the traffic problems you'll cause - other large loads are governed as to when they can be moved, why not cranes?
Thank you. To those of you who think this is a "why is everyone in my way" thread it isn't. It's a genuine question as to why I see these so frequently at least twice a week and why always at rush hour. I don't see them outside rush hour ever.
Two of the three cranes needed escorts as they were travelling so slowly. The other maybe a bit quicker. There was a load of traffic piling up behind each of them with HGVs occupying lane 2 pretty well exclusively and cars in lane 3. Unless there's some major building work on Saddleworth then they'll be travelling a fair distance so unlikely to make it for the start of the working day.
As I said its a genuine question. Especially when I see similar size cranes going in the opposite direction too
FFS I give in. If that's the best answer anyone can come up with then fine.
So Mr Ainscough needs to move one mobile crane up the motorway in one direction at rush hour and an identical one in the opposite direction at the same time on the same day so that they can both get to work at opposite ends of the M62 from where they worked yesterday. And he needs to do this two or three times a week?

Take a day off, follow a crane and ask the driver. Then come back and awe the internet with the magic secret of crane migration/tedious logistics. So Mr Ainscough needs to move one mobile crane up the motorway in one direction at rush hour and an identical one in the opposite direction at the same time on the same day so that they can both get to work at opposite ends of the M62 from where they worked yesterday. Why the vitriol against Loon? Totally valid question IMO - I'm sick of these things causing huge tailbacks - they aren't capable of travelling at a "reasonable" motorway speed - so they should stay off til it's quiet.
And heres a novel idea: why don't the people in Yorkshire hiring the cranes from Lancashire and the people in Lancashire hiring the cranes from Yorkshire come to some kind of arrangement and rent the local cranes and solve the problem completely?

It's partly the numpties on the road who should look more than just beyond their bonnet and see a huge yellow object with flashing beacons ahead and realise it will probably be traveling slower than trucks, which is why the trucks are indicating way before so numpties can see that they may want to come out.
Oh and bikers, why can't they just ride at night?
Tossers. Especially R1 riders. Gheys.

I know other roadusers don't help but neither does a rolling roadblock. Oh and bikers, why can't they just ride at night?

PS - I don't ride the R1 on the road just track. The road bike would only be a blur to most drivers anyway but I don't use that to commute.
The OP is correct. Moving a very large vehicle at 40mph at rush hour is ridiculous when you think that the majority of traffic is travelling between 56-70mph. Yes, they need to be able to use the road network to get to their destination, but they should be doing so in the early hours to take account of the exceptionally large size of the load.
I think it's called being considerate.
