£2k modern classics

OK, so in the coming weeks, I'll be after a new (to me) car. Things are looking up, I'm in a decent, lengthy contract getting fairly decent money and I'm nearly out of debt!
However, I don't want to spend that much on a car, because that's what got me into debt in the first place, and I can't justify it really (must be getting old); I want to own the car outright and only spend money on maintenance, tax, petrol and insurance - no credit!
So, the rules are:

- Modern classic - very minimal depreciation
- Fun to drive
- Be a good all rounder
- Not TOO ruinous to run
- No MX5 (I've had 2)
Corrado.. possibly a VR6 if you're lucky for £2,000 
Parts are not extortionate, fuel economy is pretty reasonable (even on the VR6 - I saw 36MPG on a recent long run), they're comfortable, and surprisingly practical. Mine (as you can see from my car history.. have had a few) have all been exceptionally reliable too.

My reasoning is that they are meant to drive well, they look good and are generally reliable with good parts availability. Many had fallen into chav hands, but most of the truly bad ones seem to be disappearing off the roads, and I can envisage that the remaining clean original cars will become desirable (ala E30 325i).

Although it's possible. Corrado - I'd agree, £2k is buying a pretty sheddy one and if its not it'll be a 4-banger and I'll always wish I had the 6-pot.
Mk2 Golf - already had one, not bad but in no hurry for another.
328 - had one of these, would have another. It was a good car
Saab - intriguing choice - how do these drive? Not sold on the looks to be honest, but a fair bit of car for the money
944 - I'd consider it. A good one for £2k?
172 Cup - Had a 182 but guessing the 172 cup should be a more exciting drive? 100 KG less and no driver aids.
306 GTI-6 - Always fancied trying one of these
Fiat Coupe - I've been looking at those. Very tempting, and £2k seems to buy a good example.
CRX - Do none rusty ones even exist?
Z3 - Having looked at the prices, I reckon i'd be lucky to get a 6-potter for £2k, and thats what I'd be wanting. I'd also be wanting one that didn't leak. And didn't need s
t loads spending on it to get it in decent condition!

If you're after a classic then it might be the best choice of the renaultsport clios in that respect. It's definitely exciting but quite harsh to live with as it's so basic. I love my Cup but sometimes I wish I had a normal 172 because of the interior. Interiors can be swapped though 
Less to go wrong with them, cheaper cam belt changes and cheap to run in my opinion. Except tax is getting silly now at £250 a year.
