hello,

figured I would put a quick post on here as running out of options.

Family member has a 2008 2.2 direct injection Vectra C. (unsure of engine code) recently its started to lose power while driving, the EML comes on and then pretty much goes into limp mode, restart and appears fine until you set off again.

in limp mode it appears to lose so much power the car starts to judder and is becoming a risk to drive, it’s that slow. check and replaced the high pressure fuel sensor fuel filter was replaced recently so both should be fine.

checked for codes, have them just not to hand as at work currently. has anyone got any quick suggestions on what to check for please, this is really starting to worry the family member as its been in the garage (not Vauxhall ) and they couldn’t diagnose, even though they had the kit that would be the same as Vauxhall for diagnostics?

summarise, goes into limp mode, EML light on, then sputters at about 10mph and almost stalls, almost like it’s out of fuel but it isn’t, help please!!!

Theres sooooo many things it could be, just work through methodically 1 by 1. Start with the simple stuff first, compression check on all cylinders, hydrocarbon check on coolant (this checks for head gasket / exhaust gasses in coolant) Coil packs, air mass sensor, lambda sensor, injectors.

thanks, general consent then is that this is a sensor and not a actual broken or mechanical fault?

Maybe the MAF sensor? I had a Vectra with the same engine and it displayed similar symptoms when the MAF sensor failed.
will relay all this on to the family member, thanks, I did think that but forget to mention it to him. if the mass failed though wouldnt that just go completely, to start with you could turn the ingnition off and it would be ok for a short while.

also, the fault codes provided, the MAF didnt appear in them, its something to do with compression.

If its showing compression problems you need to do what I said in that order but I wouldn't rule out the MAF just yet.

forgot to ask, will start one by one on this but is there a good place to start if the fault codes provided are something to do with compression and cylinder 4 is miss firing? what ever this is appears top be causing Cylinder 4 to miss fire, does that help narrow that down?

Umm, not sure really. When mine went, it came up with a shed load of random fault codes, but not the MAF sensor.

Does it idle OK, but struggle when underload?
idles ok but not 100% when its doing so, infact yes, it idles rough!

whats the cure to compression troubles? Will check the Maff. as the Maf is a DIY job, whats the easiest way to check if this is at fault with our buying a new one just yet?

I had the same problem with a 1.9 Vectra. Eventually cured by the dealer replacing the inlet manifold. Must have had an air leak somewhere?

Yeah, a direct injection petrol engine is the same as a direct injection petrol. Oh, hang on...

The Z22YH has problems with it's high pressure fuel pump, so might be worth getting a decent garage to check the fuel rail pressure.

It's bog all to do with the inlet manifold. The problem he had was leaking swirl flaps due to bad design, and dirty diesel EGR soot.

Just because he had a similar problem on the same model of car, with a totally different engine means it's OBVIOUSLY the same problem. Not. rolleyes

is this a big job, I have seen people saying they hope to god its not the High pressure fuel pump, is there a reason for this as it seems a simple thing to replace, by a garage not me of course smile

It's not a big job, but it's expensive. There was a lot of trouble a few years ago with that engine failing due to too much silicone in petrol from certain big supermarket's petrol (Every little bit of silicone helps). Not many garages can deal with a direct injection petrol, either.

Ok, will look into this, just asked him and apparently he only fills up at a texaco garage near to his house, he was aware of the crap from tesco's and his general opinion is to never use supermarket fuel.

so its either something to do with a sensor somewhere, possible the coil pack too I've read somewhere or ultimately and hopefully not its the Fuel pump...

I'm a complete novice when it comes to cars so excuse if i have got anything wrong, hence looking for advice from your guys known as the pro's!
