Depends whereabouts in East London you are, but beyond the icky bits inside the M25 most of Essex is actually very nice.

If you're north of the river I'd suggest heading out into the more rural parts of Essex towards Thaxted and the Bardfields. You're into idyllic villages pretty quickly, so I wouldn't expect it would be difficult to find a smart gastro pub somewhere.

This. I live in Berkshire and have done a day trip to teteghem, near Calais, for lunch and a drive, just on a whim with Mrs Fas

Just be careful when you tell people afterwards what you did at the weekend in case they miss- hear you!

If you're south of the river then the road from Sevenoaks to Caterham is a nice one and Westerham's a good place for lunch. This route has the added bonus of taking in an Aston Martin dealership, a Ferrari dealership and of course Caterham's showroom!

This place is owened by a PH'er who runs a breakfast club there:

If the Full English is anything to go by the pub food in normal hours should be OK. Just to the west of Chlemsford so easy in 1 hour from East London straight up the A12 and through the town centre past the cricket ground.

Another potential little gem that has been mentioned recently on here is this place:

Me and Mrs Ghost are going to pay a visit one Saturday lunchtime when the weather picks up a bit. From the map I estimate about 20 minutes from J8 (Stansted Airport) of the M11 so again you have easy access from East London.

I'm in the same position, east London 1st and 2nd gear does my head in.

I drove down to the mulberry chris Evans place on a Sunday and was a nice drive once you got out of the sticks.
