volvo S40 T4? or a saab aero? estate versions available in both.
the S40 seats arent up to the usual volvo standards when it comes to seats but they're still brilliant. cant go wrong with volvo or saab seats in my experience and i do have a slightly dodgy back.
an S60R or V70R has comfort, sport and track modes for the suspension but not been in one and experimented with the settings.

I have had a bad lower back for 15 years, and been through plenty of cars in that time. Currently have an S4 with the superb electric recaro's with lumbar - and have travelled on many a 300+ trip and got out the other end with no pain.
That said, the ride is very bumpy and overly so at times.

I have some back issues and found that my morgan is the most comfortable car I have. It does have adjustable AVO's. but I think its mainly due to the natural flexing of the chassis, which creates a chiropractic effect.
Subaru make some nicely supportive seats though, and you might want to steer clear of run flat tyres

The comfort seats in my 5 series were excellent and even with the sports suspension it wasn't so harsh that my back got sore. I appreciate that it is a size up from what you are looking up but it may be worth considering that sector as in my experience they generally ride better than the A4/3series/c-class crowd.

Agree completely. Current steer is an E61 5 series SE and the ride (without RFTs) is really very good and far better than a previous M-Sport 5 we owned. It also rides much better than an SE suspended 3 Series and TBH still manages to handle better than any S-Line Audi I have driven (A4/A6).
