Bonnet bras, what cars do they suit?

So a mate at work had a t4 vw in red with a black checked bonnet bra and it looks really good. I've been looking at them for the e36 m3 since, but have come to the conclusion that they look bloody awful on them, especially on estoril ones.
What cars do they look good on and why? What are the criteria?

They work well on cars that are in an environment where the number of stones in the road mean that it makes sense to ruin the fuel economy and looks of your vehicle to avoid getting a great many stonechips on the bonnet of your car. These environments are mainly confined to the western states of the USA. If nobody at your office is wearing a Stetson and carrying a colt 45 (the beer or gun will do) then it's likely that anyone using one is in the "Dub Scene" and therefore is only worthy of scorn for their bonnet bra choice.

They're for protection, right? To stop paint chipping and bug splatter?
They're ugly, really ugly and so much more obviously aesthetically degrading to the front of a car than the odd stone chip or fly.
So, you keep it fitted for the entire period that you own the car, then you sell your car on to someone, free of stone chips and bugs?
So, what benefit are they to the owner with one fitted?
Sure, nice stone chip bonnet free but who sees it? No-one, unless you take it off and drive around to show off your nice shiny front end, then you get stone chips and bugs. Just like the rest of us.

Interesting, im thinking about a respray in the future and that looks decent.
