Driving to Italy

Driving through France, around Alps, Italian lakes, back through Germany for two weeks in July.

Choice of cars to take. 2007 A3 Sportback 2.0t or 2010 jaguar XF 3.0DS.

jag would be great but concern would be size and risk of damage around the narrow Italian lake streets. How bad are the roads around here and how at risk are you from scrapes and bashes?

The XF would sure be nice on the long motorway legs!

can you not use google street view at the location your planning on taking it?

whats the lakes exact location do you know? eg postcode

Take the Jag, if its too big for the street then don't drive down it. Does the Jag not have folding mirrors which will help and of course you can always park up and have a walk.

It's in bellagio. Not too worried about odd street here and there, concern is driving in general, how haphazard the Italians are with driving and how likely am I going to be to return to the car to find damage

Taking the lake routes in Italy would be fine, it's the autostrada that you'd probably risk getting it dinged or scraped on!!

We drive to Italy most years, 100% of the trips we pick up a ding/scrape. It will happen.

Scrapes may or not be picked up its the other drivers you need to worry about not the streets.


Ps driven to Italy twice not one ding or scrape even driving in very tight streets in florence etc etc.

But quite a few near misses.

Even when we did Stelvio, as we went from Bolzano to Lake Como, half the vehicles puffing their way up were bloody camper vans. The other side to Bormio was brilliant and empty though

The roads will be fine.

I took an A6 to Lake Como. Too big for the local roads, I would have rather had a smaller car whilst there.
