I won a car auction on eBay and today seller rings me and tells me that his ex-wife is kicking up a huge fuss about him selling the car because he bought it for her. He says that he purchased the car in 2007 so does not have a receipt / bill of sale any more. His ex's name is on the logbook and now we have no idea how to proceed?

I've told him that I am more than happy to apply for a new V5 but I think the problem now lies with his entitlement to sell the car in the first place, any ideas how he can prove that he bought it?

In the meantime hes trying to sort things out with his ex but thought i'd ask here for some tips / advice. I know from checking the systems online that the car has been sat for almost a month will no tax and no insurance so I have a feeling shes just being difficult

Potentially a messy situation if for example is wife decides to report the car stolen or something :O

run away. run away now.

with no legal knowledge at all i would doubt he has the right to sell the car and its a giant can of worms that you want to avoid. even if it was a lamborghini gallarado for £55. run away.

A colleague of mine managed to lose a car he bought and which had his name on the V5 to his ex-girlfriend in court after a break-up. He wasn't even married for goodness' sake.

If there's any question of a dispute over ownership don't touch it with a bargepole.

Sounds like he has no clear title...therefore he can't legally sell the car. This is supported by his ex's name being on the V5. At best its joint property, so again he can't sell without her agreement.
