Gangs Targetting Defenders

Somebody at work yesterday had there Defender almost pinched but she caught the gang in the act so they quickly scurryed off. She informed the police and the intellegence they gave her was that there are gangs targetting these perticular vehicles because they can buy some sort of device and software to disable the alarm and immobiliser and also start the engine. But apparntly there was a problem with the device so they tried to hotwire it which is why they took so long and the owner was awoken which is how she stopped them.
She's absolutely distraught and is now selling the vehicle when it comes back from the garage as there £2000 worth of damage been done. Is this sort of equipment for every car. I just found it quite strange and thought i'd share the story as i know nothing much about stuff like this at all.

She's selling it because its' alarm and immobiliser successfully beat a determined and well equipped attempt to steal it?

Yeah its called a piece of wire

You can get a 300Tdi defender up and running with 2 pieces of wire.

One to the stop solenoid and one to spark against the starter.

And with mine you can open the door with a key, any key especailly pie ones

Bypassing immobilisers isnt a simple job and they failed. No matter what car you have some is going to try and havr it away if he thinks he can. That said, good call on ditching a defender. Tell her to get a disco instead.

Defender theft is nothing new. You can take them apart with basic tools. I used to get regular letters from Derbys cops warning me of Defender thefts in the area.
Which was nice.

Anyone with a basic knowledge of car mechanics can do that, it's not a big secret or some sort of groundbreaking new tehcnique.

All you need is the standard diagnostic tools to start a Defender without a key, we did it a lot at work when we couldn't be bothered to open the key safe. The easy solution is to get a pedal box, take about 2 minutes to put in place when parked up and leave the only option open to the crook a trailer. Couple that with SkyTags and they will just move on to a different vehicle.

Yep, not limits to defenders its due to the way diesel engines work
