Help with a Glasses Guide valuation for an E30 318iS
Discussion
A cry for help on behalf of a friend - no really!
Vehicle:
1990 318iS
129,000 miles
Minty mint bodywork and mechanicals
Leather interior
15" BBS alloys
I'll try and be brief. He's the victim of a no fault accident, third party pulled out of a side road into the rear three quarter of his '91 318iS. This fact is undisputed by all parties. The problem has come with his insurance company. They are offering 35% of the purchase price six months ago(2k), and since then another 1.5-2k has been invested in making a bodily perfect car mechanically perfect. Just to be clear this car is absolutely mint, no rust anywhere, as we confirmed when we dropped all of the underbody components to replace every rubber bush on the vehicle and put a OEM design stainless exhaust on.
The insurance company are offering ~£700 on the basis that this is top book for the car according to the glasses guide. We have four questions which would be really useful to have answers to:
1. Is the E30 even in the glasses guide still?
2. Is the iS listed as a seperate model - they are significantly more valuable in the market?
3. If it is in there what values do the guide give for the car?
4. Albany assistance have been involved on the instruction of the insurer to sort a hire car etc. Is it too late to use an independent claims handler he can trust?
Any info with respect to these questions would be gratefully received.
Thanks
N.

Sorry, can't help with Glass's - though would be surprised if it's still listed. It's free to do a check on their website though...or at least it was recently.
Your best bet, aside from bottoming out the Glass's aspect, is to pull together examples of other similar iS models - have a look on here, e30 zone etc etc. You should be able to use these to demonstrate a true market value.
...and tell your pal to put it on a classic policy with agreed valuation next time!

Looking at Practical Classics, they don't have a price for the 318is. However, there are a couple of E30 prices. (all condition 1 below.)
325i Saloon £3000
325i Sport £5000
E30 M3 £16000
3 Series Conv. £4500
So if it was in A1 condition I don't think they can argue less than £3k.
If he has a classic insurance policy they generally accept valuations from a club, it might be worth contacting them and see if they can value it from photos (my club will do this), which will certainly help.
Other than that it's a case of trawling auto trader, completed ebay listings and so on to prove that it's worth more. It may be that they've not realised the difference between the 318i and the 318is.

As said before, collect as many adverts as possible to give to the insurers. I don't think you'll have trouble finding good iS's for £2k.
Has your friend got any photographs of the car, engine bay, under the car to confirm to his insurers that the car is as good as the adverts provided.
How about getting a figurehead from BMWCC or E30zone to issue a letterhead (not sure if anyone on the zone has a letterhead) with a valuation of a great condition iS would be worth - granted they couldn't value your friends but that's what the photos would do.

As above, have a look for adverts and use it as evidence. O/T where did he get the exhaust from? I'm on the lookout for a decent exhaust system...
Do BTB not do one for the iS?
t. I've seen the Fritz's Bits system, may have to give them a call...Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
