I used to think that you could enter a bus lane to turning left, say for 40-50 yards before the turn or so.

Some of the replies in this thread...

...are now making me re-think if you can or not.

I can't find any clues in the HighWay Code either.

Eg,
I'd take the red route, where-as the populous seems to favour the blue route:

Not being able to cross a solid white line is surely the clue?

OK - fair enough.

Were you never taught that you could though?
Not that that's a defence now though.

There's a bus lane on the approach to a roundabout out the back of Ware (I think it's the Harlow junction off the A10..)

The bus lane is a solid white line, but near the end of the bus lane (15 yards or so before the roundabout) the solid white line becomes a dashed one, so this is pressumably when you can then use the bus lane to take the first/second exit from the roundabout?

Other than in an emergency, I'm not aware of any other time you can cross a solid white line. Though would happily stand corrected as it's some years since I took my test.

(Odd that there's no method of ensuring drivers keep up with changes to driving standards/laws/protocols)

True enough.
It's 25 years since I scrapped through my test, so there's probably hell of a lot changed, 'rule' wise, since then.

I'd be interesting to see a side by side comparison of updates from 1985 to 2010.

Interesting reading this from last year:

And your point is?

This is about whites lines bordering bus lanes, not centrelines.

So is the solid white line on the Bus Lane a red herring?
