Right a simple one this. My 19 year old son is about pass 1 year of claim free driving and would like to upgrade from his Metro so what fun cars could be insurable now ?
We are looking to keep the insurance below 2 grand so any advice would be great.

Do some online quotes and see how you get on.

When I was 20 I got a guote from Elephant for £1,000 on a B4RSK with no NCB.

I got into a 206 GTi 180 (Ins group 17) at 18 with 1 years no claims for £1400. Strangely a Clio 182 (Group 16) was much more expensive. Now in a BMW 320ci and I was 19 when I took out the policy. It was about £1200 for me.

Varies so much between people though, best way is to just spend an hour getting quotes on various cars. I still do it looking for the next car. Insurance groups are such a rough guide and shouldn't really be followed.

Looking forward to 21. Prices drop for me by an incredible amount.

Had a microscopically slim chance of being funny if OP was talking about himself, and not his son tongue out

Id stick with the Metro for another year if there was nothing wrong with it.
Put the cash in an account for a year and get something even better

I bought my '97 Mk2 MR2 at 18 with zero NCB. Insurance only cost around £1500 with Admiral. Get a good one and have a few years of stylish, bulletproof motoring :-)

Yeah, spitfire would be a good call.
80's Porsche 911?
I insured one at 22 for £700

More realistically, 924?

MX5, MR2?

Yep thats what we we thinking an MX5 or MR2 mk 1. We are in a good area but it seems everything is just getting stupid price wise to insure.

You'll have to go very left field.

Anything obvious would have been bought & crashed before - leading to high premiums.

I had one at 19 absolutely brilliant little car loved mine to bits. Not many around now though I suppose.
