I got to sit in an F40 yesterday, really really made my day, sad but true. The one in this thread.

Anyway, I still think that if I won the lottery I would choose an F50 over an F40. The N/A F1 developed V12 makes such an incredible noise, it's just spine tingling!!
I know it's not the well built, directorship, manly car choice. But I still would.
Of course if I won a huge amount of money then a 288, F40 and F50 would all be in the garage.

I too cant see why there is such an irrational F50 hatred in general, it was the pinup Ferrari of my childhood generation and many a time did I watch the video clip of Charles Kwan buggering off into the lead at Macau. I have sat in what was the only racing F50 in the world at the time, too.
The F50 was a bloody fast car and brilliant bit of engineering that swept all before it, but.....
you have to admit, the F40 was more iconic, pretty and pure and focussed - the F50 seems to me to be the start of Ferrari morphing from the raw power, beauty and soul of their halo cars of old to the technologically obsessed adenoidal and ugly F1-computers on wheels they make today.

More iconic perhaps, because more people mave made it an icon. Its impressive but it sure aint pretty, and IIRC road test accounts say the F50 is if anything a more pure, focussed drive. F40 might be a bit faster in a straight line though.I respect the F40 for its raw nuttiness, but I'd take the F50.

I can't see why you think that. The F50 has no electronics of driver aids. Just a brilliant F1 derived engine bolted directly to a carbon tub. I'd have one over an F50 any day.
I've never actively disliked the F50, and have heard that fantastic engine noise first hand, however when I click the remote to the roller door on the front of my lottery garage, and the sunlight passes over the bonnet of my Eggenburger RS500, Group 4 Mk2 Escort, and handful of Porsches, it'll then hit the orgasmicly functional and iconic shape of the F40 .... The F50 just doesn't inspire the same emotions.
Put the cheque into my bank, however, and convert my dreams into a more considered reality where I'll be looking with less rose tinting, and more objectively for my one and only Ferrari, and the choice may be different.

I've got the impression that there's a strong correlation between when someone grew up and which of the two they prefer. Obviously there will be exceptions, but I think overall younger generations prefer the F50.I grew up in the 80s/ early 90s and for me its the F40 anyday

None of the "top of the range" Ferrari models are beautiful though are they. All of them are styled in a way which shouts "look at me" in a clumsy sort of Italian Halfords manner. So you buy the cars based on their abilities, which is fair enough. So with 99% of people lusting after an F40 and shunning the F50 you have to assume PHers prefer a turbo lag setup to that of a highly tuned NA V12. Personally I think the only point to owning any Italian exotic would be for the looks and the soundtrack. Which is why I'd take a 355 on Tubi's over all of them.
I have a question?
Does part of the F50's 'lack' of appeal come from the fact that it was made out to be identical to the Ferrari F1 car at the time when it just wasn't? Has that terrible piece of marketing on it's release soiled it's reputation before the car was released? Just a thought really.

I love the look of the f40, i love the legend that it has created, the purity of purpose, but- like most others i suspect- can only go on glowing praise from tests, tv slots etc. I was lucky enough to see them racing against the F1's at Le Mans, and they looked utterly superb.
On a track, im sure they are amazing- they should be, its their natural habitat, but everyday?
I would take the F50 in an instant. Removable roof, noise, styling........All far better than the F40 in my eyes. perhaps not as thrilling to drive, but i imagine that there are numeorus degrees of 'thrilling' and couldnt imagine being short changed if pushed to drive one.
F50gt sounded nothing short of amazing.
