Removing a stud extractor!
Discussion
I had a bleed nipple on a front caliper shear off when trying to remove it, so tried a stud extractor which has now snapped.
It totally my fault for allowing so incompetent mechanic to change the pads on the bike last year.
However I now need to get the broken stud out.Anyone know what type of drill will be needed?
thanks.

A few cobalt drills should do the trick, but use a slow drill speed & plenty of lube, do not let the drill get hot or it will blunt & snap off, making it almost impossible to remove.
The other option is take the calliper off & get it laser spark eroded, much better chance of removing the debris without damaging the calliper.

You'll need one made of unobtanium, stud extractors are as hard as b

Not sure if a "carbide" drill will do it, good chance it'll break up when hitting the stud extractor.
If you take it to an engineering company i'm sure they'll have some old bits to mess up but may cost a bit. If you must do it yourself get a few spare!
No idea on the cost but can't see it being more than about £20 for the company to do it for you. Unless you've got a pillar drill or similar it can be a pain just trying to hold onto the part while you drill.
It's hard enough getting them out with all the machinery etc so unless your confident i'd suggest taking it to someone with the kit.
Good luck!
ETA good call on the laser eroding, if you can find someone local to do it shouldn't be too much but have no idea on a cost.

What is laser spark eroding?
Using a laser to burn away unwanted material, leaving the parent metal undamaged. Very clever bit of kit & very precise in the right hand.
Never heard it called laser spark eroding
If you are anywhere near sheffild then use erodatools
I had exactly the same situation as the original poster. But I got lucky.
After breaking the stud extractor, I went at it with some drills. I managed to remove some material around the extractor, without damaging the thread the bleed nipple uses. I then used a centre punch to 'move' the extractor around a little bit, and then a bit more drilling.
Eventually, with much care, a LOT of patience, and even more luck, I got the extractor out and removed the remains of the broken bleed nipple without ANY damage to the threads or to the sealing face at the bottom of the hole.
If I tried to do it 10 more times I would fail, but it is possible. Just.

Just ask around at a few engineering shops. If they haven't got the kit, they'll know someone who does. We routinely use a small toolmaker who has EDM kit to spark-erode snapped taps. It'll take minutes to do a small item like you've got.
