I'll keep this short:

I was willing to PX my car.
Left a £500 deposit on a car at main dealers.
Had to return 5 days later (today) once finance was organised.
I have spoken to the sales person, and due to an extras that cannot be included in the finance (i.e gap insurance+ a protective coating) I have arrived at a situation that given the PX price and finance implications, I have gone completly cold on the whole thing.

Do I lose my £500? I have a vehicle reciept for that amount.

It is however on a credit card in my wifes name. I pushed the buttons.

This is what nightshifts + having a pregnant wife does to me..... FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU

Ta muchly,

Gwiz

If they changed the deal after you placed the deposit, then they don't have the thing you placed the deposit for any more; I'd expect it back in that case. If the extras weren't agreed before the deposit was placed and you're trying to change the deal after the face then I think they're entitled to keep it. They may give it back anyway though.

No, you will get it back. It kind of defeats the whole object of a deposit, but they can't keep it.

There’s a similar discussion in SP&L at the moment.

In the situation you describe the chances are you’ll get your money back.

If they are being reasonable they should give you your money back. It sounds like a bit of a screw up and I don't see how you can be to blame..... plus they almost certainly haven't lost out significantly by taking the car off sale for only 5 days.

Speaking as a car salesman, I'd be very suprised if you get your deposit back. If you signed an order form you will probably find that it states a non refundable deposit. Only exception would be if the sale was subject to finance being approved. Why cant you put the paint protection and GAP in the finance? If its the GAP and paint protection you don't now want, just cancel it, its your right.

The dealer has taken the car off sale for 5 days and therefore lost opportunity to sell, as its very close to the end of the month that may be the difference between making target or not to the salesman, sales manager and the dealership.

If you are very lucky you might get it back, but I've known customers loose £2k deposit before and £250 is very regular.
