I know Mumsnet is an easy target, but you've really got to feel for this woman:
Mumsnet OP said:
We are doing the sensible thing and trading in our beloved VW R32 3.2l. It is a driving machine sent from heaven but it is just too damned expensive to run.... We have two small DCs in car seats. We also have a Land Rover Freelander tDi which I drive. We have somewhat of a petrolhead past, but are willing to be less extravagant for a little while. We like the DSG gearbox on the R32 and the 4w drive, and the speed of course... I know we're not going to get anything anywhere near as exciting for £5k but don't want a total jalopy either.

If you had £5k to play with, what would you buy?
The answers?
Kia C'eed
Ford Focus
Vauxhall Astra

Ah well, at least nobody suggested an MX5.

Yeah, that was a decent suggestion to be fair.

Idiot from Mumsnet said:
OP, you are a terrible car snob. A car is just a tin can that gets you from A to B. If it is the nicest car in the world it will (usually) be worth a tiny proportion of what you paid for it 5 years later and a few years later be so old fashioned looking everyone will laugh at it. (O.K.just a few cars turn into classics, but they are hard to pick in advance) All cars are a total waste of money and what you need is the cheapest acceptable form of transport as it is clear you need to be sensible with money.
Now I understand why they have such a bad reputation over there, I've never seen so much drivel in one paragraph before!

That is the first time I've actually read something on Mumsnet, I've heard it referenced many times. The thing that stood out to me was not their ignorance or lack of knowledge as I had expected, but the fact that they can swear on Mumsnet and we can't. I'm quite disappointed to discover that they have more freedom to say what they want than we do.

That was fun.

Interesting to see how vehemently the OP hates (the image of) modern fords - just like my OH. Nothing I can do to change her. She was actually the same about Skodas until her dad recently bought an Octavia RS.

Also interesting to hear the love for diesels. Half for the mpg half because they genuinely feel that they are faster than petrols (or at least it sounds like that's what they are implying). One of them was actually defending her Focus but then saying she'd prefer it it if was diesel (?).

Worst suggestion (and made loads of times) - a Defender (eh?!?)
Best suggestion - XJR.

What bugs me most about that forum is the way so many people post their opinion as if it is fact and refuse to consider other opinions.

Also, I think they have spent so long talking down to their children they have forgotten how to speak politely to another adult.

Horrible place.

Can anbody sign up and give her some good advice?

I don't see what the problem would be with buying a Mk4 R32. Similar fuel costs, much cheaper tax and the same performance. And better looks IMO!

So much stupid congregated in one place.
You're wrong Money Saving Expert is filled with stupid, I read a thread last night about a shop where you take your old tat and they buy it from you, they also sell old tat to people. Half the thread was moaning that the shop wouldn't pay full price for the old tat because it wasn't perfect, the other half people moaning that the old tat they had bought wasn't great as it broke after a while. None of them realise that the problem with the broken tat they buy is caused by the people who managed to sell half broken tat to the shop in the first place for a good price.

It's the dumbest forum in the world and some of the posters type in a way that makes them sound even more dumb.

I lost the will to read any more when the OP said "Although clearly the R32 running costs are extortionate, but then it's verging on supercar territory". Erm.... What supercar is this?

What that thread does show is how much women have feel for the VAG (no pun intended) good quality plastics mean a well built car thing. The two people I know who have had the most hassle with modern cars owned a Passat and a Fabia VRS, yet by lady wisdom the focus is unreliable and rubbish.
