Ive borrowed my nephews transit connect (think ford focus panel van kind of thing, with no rear seats and boarded out) to start and deplete the immense crap pile ive been cultivating in my back garden over several years. Ive got a bit of time off next week and want to make a start.

So, can i take a transit connect to my local tip and dump my garden crap? It's a mix of bits of old kitchen, bits of old car and general rubbish.

You're normally not allowed to dump trade waste - so you're OK there, plus there's generally a height limit that prevents big vehicles entering. At the tip near me its set at 1.8m

Give them a ring and ask if you can bring it down. My local place said that bits of kitchen were considered construction waste and they wouldn't take it.

For our tip you need to get a free permit in advance if you use a van to dispose of household waste. I guess it's to stop people dumping trade waste

Depends on your council.

My brother has issues with getting his white T5 into the tip as they keep insisting that it is a trade vehicle. Never mind that he uses it to carry his surfboards and bikes and stuff normally... kinda like how you have to pay van rate on toll bridges even when it's not being used for trade, sadly.

At my local tip you can use a van providing you have a utility bill or some other form of address ID.

It's a long time since ive needed to go to the tip, i'm amazed how much harder it seems now to take stuff there.

You can take household waste to the tip in a van. You'll probably need proof of address (take your council tax bill) and you'll be ok!

My local tip will not allow vans without a permit. They need a reg no. to issue the permit which can take upto a week to come through.

Didn't even consider this last week. We were moving house and had hired a LWB hightop transit, rocked up to the tip, chucked all the stuff I had (washing machine, old exercise machines and the like) got back in the van and left, nobody said a word although it was a Sunday.

Where I live in Shropshire you have to have a permit to take anything in a commercial vehicle or a trailer.

And they wonder why there's a fly tipping problem...

It's bonkers round here (Wandsworth area). Over the years I've taken a Volvo estate, a Zafira and a Jeep Cherokee to the local tip without problem. But try to take the same amount of stuff in a small hire van and they chase you away. Bonkers.

I take my Astra van to the local tip fairly often and have never had a problem, however, they wont allow a van in if it is sign written!

At my local tip, on Wednesday and Saturday, they open the height barrier to allow vehicles over 1.8m in. That is however still only for vehicles carrying domestic waste and they do check.

My local council, NW Leicestershire have this one all tied up in knots. If I take my car, I may tip what I like. However, only 6 bags of hardcore in 6 months (no definition of bag size or how they track time).

If I take my Defender (panels in rear), then I'm hounded away for trying to throw so much as a crisp packet. I need a yellow permit, which has a Reg number and a small trailer entitlement. If I turn up now, I can use the landy, but no hardcore permitted at all, as its a 'van'.

I need a special fkin sky blue pink with yellow dots permit to tip rubble in my so called 'van'.

All this and my council tax bill has a fortune apportioned to recycling. Can't see why, we can't fking recycle anything!

Bitter and twisted, me? Nah. smile

Here in Hull you need a permit/ticket for a van/pickup ... pretty sure you can only get a certain amount of tickets too

If you can borrow some magnetic signs from a courier it may help the hint of domestic waste wink
