Interesting component

I spotted this recently, I'd be interested if anyone can correctly guess what it is.

It looks to be some sort of leaf spring, but the paint suggests it doesn't move a lot.

Nope, wrong colour.

ETA To me it looks more like a primitive heat sink than a leaf spring.

Well done everyone, it is a leaf sprung towbar. Quite a good idea we thought.

It's fitted to this Lanchester armoured car, as seen at Bovington tank museum.

I was searching around for towbars last night.
You can see the spring has leaves (?) on each side for push and pull, but no obvious traces.
