V5C Document Reference Number Question..
Discussion
I recently bought a used car from a main dealer. It occurred to me today whilst tinkering around that I was promised that the MOT certificate would be mailed to me (it had been done apparently but was misplaced) but has not yet been despite it being several weeks since getting the car.
Curiosity getting the better of me, I wondered if indeed the car had an MOT at all. I'm still waiting for the logbook to come through from the DVLA but do have the New Keeper Supplement.. so I stuck the cars registration details and Document Reference Number on the supplement sheet into the VOSA website and apparently nothing on record. Gulp.
I then entered the MOT number from last years MOT (which I do have) and that shows a complete history of all MOT's undertaken but, again, there seems to be no reference to having a current MOT.
I just wanted to check regarding the Document Reference Number - is it possible this gets changed between owners so the old Document Reference Number is invalid? Is the Document Reference Number on the new keeper supplement the same as on the main logbook? I'm just trying to think of any possible reason why these are not tallying up but I think it looks like the dealer has lied.
To be honest I'm starting to get a bit irate at how I've been treated by this particular dealer and this isn't the first problem. Why are they seemingly all the same? :|
Thanks in advance.

Nevermind.. I ran a check subsequently using the previous MOT and registration number and it tells me that there are "later tests recorded" meaning that there must be a current MOT. I'll be sure to confirm this whenever the logbook finally comes through though.
Cheers.
"Later tests recorded" may mean the vehicle has been subjected to tests, it doesn't necessarily mean they were passed. A VT30 "Refusal of an MoT Test Certificate" may have been issued instead.Cheers.
If the dealer had it MoT'd and it passed, the MoT station that carried out the work can produce a duplicate for you upon request.
I wouldn't wait for paperwork if I were you, your insurer may refuse to pay out in the event of a claim if the vehicle does not have a current certificate.
Traders/dealers don't "lose" MoTs without a reason.

Cheers for that. Problem is the dealer isn't local to me (over an hour away) and I don't know what garage did the MOT! I don't believe they have the facilities on site to do MOT's. I need to chase something else up (being messed around over a second year warranty I purchased, but for which I can't get proof either.. sigh) so will give them a call again on Monday to give them a prod. Start by phoning them, they will know which MoT station they used to carry out the test on your car and they should have the sense to retain a file copy of your certificate (whether they bought it into stock with an MoT already, or used a sub-contractor to do it) - if not they'll certainly have an invoice from an MoT station to have paid and filed somewhere.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
