Im talking £10k+ here.

I've spent that kind of money on a private sale before, not had a problem and made a good saving.

I have, but has to be a good enough saving over buying from a dealer.

Sure would. If i don't have the cash then i will bring a cashiers cheque with me and I hand over the cash after the title gets transferred to my name.

Paid nearly £14k in cash in a private deal with a fellow PHer. We both went to his bank and paid the cash in. I drove off in the car with my section of the V5. All went sweetly and I haven't had a problem with the car in the 6 months I've had it.

Have bought and sold any number of cars privately for up to double that amount over the years and never had a problem, in fact he biggest issue is when cash is required, banks in the UK aren't too fond of handing over 20k in used 50s lol

yep frequently.

never had an issue. I guess it depends what type of car your going for.

Mind you the last three havent even counted the cash, one collected bentleys and one had three ferraris, two porsches and tens of others valuable cars plus a 500k + boat just sitting in his garage. The other I never saw the cars but he had eight garages and said all were full. some people just dont care.

If the seller had some provenance on here then possibly but as a general rule no. That sort of cash takes me a long time to earn and I would rather pay the extra for the security that going to a proper dealer can offer.

I wouldn't exactly call 10k big money - and wouldn't hesitate to spend that privately (subject to usual checks).

Nope because the cars I buy usually need a warranty on them and unless they can be transferred then I want that piece of mind of buying from a dealer.

I've never bought a car from a dealer, I would rather cut out the middle man and save myself a couple of grand, plus if it's an aftermarket warranty it's not normally worth a light as everything seems to be covered by the old favourite wear and tear.

The chances are if your spending out that kind of money on your average car it will still have quite a bit of its original warranty on the car.

I had to take my roadster in as the steering came loose and I had a few leaks which were done under warranty and I bought it privately off eBay I even got some nice courtesy mercs from the main dealer and free coffee.

Yes, wouldn't bother me, as long as everything checked out tbh.

I bought a year old 911 Turbo with cash, but as said already, it was a massive saving over the dealer price.

Ive sold a few high value cars privately.... S6, range rover, ml, etc

All went without problem and all to private individuals rather than traders. My own experience is that the kind of people used to doing these kind of deals have their heads skrewed on right and very easy to deal with, even if there are added complications such as plate transfers and finance involved.

I would not have any worries about buying a car privately over £10k. As has been said before, do the usual checks and you should get a bargain. If anything comes back fishy though, I would proceed with extreme caution as you have no comeback once purchased.

I don't usually spend that sort of money nowadays, but brought my vx220 and Mini Cooper S privately and had a thoroughly good experience (plus a couple of grand in my back pocket). If there is some manufacturers warranty left, it all helps. (the alternator on the vx220 failed, but was covered by Vauxhall warranty and was changed FOC by Vauxhall, with no questions being asked!)
