hi guys,

my motorhome is stuck in reverse. i have a chap that i trust who is based 20 miles away.

if i phone up the aa and claim ignorance, will they tow it to the garage that i trust or will they most likely say it's too far and to find a closer garage?

thanks

If you have Relay they will I believe where you choose within reason and 20 miles is ok.

If its just Homestart you have then I think you're out of luck, as that is the only option they offer in that package.

They may well recover you somewhere but you'll probably be charged for it. I wouldn't have thought they'd just say "Tough luck, you are not at home so we're not touching you."

sorry, meant to say that i have homestart and relay. the whole lot.

the other thing is will they tow a motorhome? i haven't read the small print and am not sure if it requires increased premiums as it's a large vehicle.

also there is the problem of it being stuck in reverse and rear wheel drive so cannot be towed. it'll have to be craned onto a low loader unless the chap can get it out of gear and into neutral. Oops.

20 miles ?

Good practice for your reversing then biggrin

More seriously , disconnect the prop shaft and tow it .

With a specialist vehicle 20 miles is not unreasonable.

I belong to three Roadside rescue schemes because I own ten fun cars and four classics trailer/tow/transport them about to all sorts of places.

Over the years had a RangeRover/Discovery/Freelander towing tralers with race cars break down occasionally. Sometimes the trailer, sometimes the tow car. Occasionally broke down in the classics or fun cars individually.

Always had brilliant service taken to any reasonable destination sometimes over 100 miles. I do not abuse the services but cars are never 100% especially specials and Kit Cars. Trailers lead a very hard life.

I would be very surprised if the AA object. Always been absolutely excellent with me.

Well I work for the AA and if you have home start and relay we normally speaking will take that distance, can I ask what kind of caravan we are talking here and it may well be just a case of adjusting cables or rods and also if you dont ask than you are never going to know? Good luck and if you want you can allways pm me for any more advice.

thanks for your help everyone,

it's a coach built motorhome on a merc chassis. it's in storage at the moment and there's a gearbox chap down the road. i'm going to have him have a look at it and see what he thinks. if it's a big job i may have to get my chap to have a look.
