Unfortunately my bangernomics E34 has reached the end of it's useful life for me. With a blown head gasket and a dodgy vanos unit seems to be the final nail in the coffin for it.

It's got a couple of other bugs with it, and I don't have the time to repair it myself or the funds to pay someone else to fix it. Nor do I have time or the room to break it.

I've never scrapped a car before, so I'm not sure what the deal is, or how to approach this? Is it literally a case of rocking up to a scrapyard and seeing what they'll give for it, or is there a smarter way of playing this game?

Alternatively what's the opinion on selling a car for spares/repairs rather than scrapping it?

Cheers for any advice.

Phone a few n find out what they are doing per ton then take your pick.

Precious metals go for more so if u have a cat (dont know if it does) take it off n weigh it in separately

Drive up, park on weighbridge, see weight, collect ticket from office, inform dismantler of alloys (extra cash) and 'metals' ie cats (more cash) remove any tax, job jobbed.

Considered this with my old Merc. Think scrap value was £100/tonne back then IIRC. Think you'll need the V5 on you to scrap it.

Never weighed mine in. Stuck it on ebay starting bid £200 no reserve. Got rid of it biggrin

Type the details into cartakeback.com
You will get an instant quote. Provided you havent stripped bits off of the car, they will come and collect and give you what they quote.

If the rest of the car is in decent nick why not stick it on Ebay as spares or repair? I did that with a knackered old Mondeo I had, which didn't even have a rear bumper. Got more for it than what I would have got weighing it in and the guy just came and picked it up in a tow truck.

Did this with my old wreck of an Ambiwlans (Renault Master) They took it away and left me a cheque for £240.00

That is a very handy site! Cheers for that.

I think I'll stick it on ebay, with a starting price of what's offered there. If it doesn't work, at least I know what the fall-back is.

Thank you very much.

We worked out one day, you only get an extra £4 or so for filling the tank with water. Plus it means you'll never be able to go back into that yard again.

If you're going to weigh anything in, I'd recommend doing it as soon as possible. Scrap shells fell £10 per tonne last week and are set to drop again this weekend. Current price is in around £150.

Okay, I know this goes against the rules of Bangernomics, but I think I'm going to try and repair it.

It should cost about £200-£250 in parts and head skimming, which is what I'd get if I were to weigh it in. So worse case scenario is if I fail, I end up with no BMW but I'm not out of pocket. Which is effectively where I am at the moment.

If it works, I can either sell it, or use it.
