Parkers states this generation 3 has a 435l boot and 5 has 410litres but have found them extremely unreliable in past. Can any body comment on size (below tonneau cover)?

Profession means loads of junk (preferrably under tonneau cover for security) required. Currently provided with an Octavia with a 580litre boot but will be cutting down stuff I carry...

Take your octavia with a bootfull and go and look at the two cars.

E46 is not very big at all. Not as bad as the Alfa but nowehere near, for example a Mondeo or Passat. E39 very good, similar to a V70. W210 E Class is the biggest you'll find, and not a bad car if you find a nice one. They aren't all rusty.
