So my mate has asked my opinion on something motor related, and I'm turning to the masses!!

He's looking at a 2009 R8. It's covered 4100 miles with one owner and he's been offered it for £58k through Audi. He's asked how much I think he'd lose over a year or two's ownership. I've guessed over a year, £10k, over 2, maybe £16-18k. Do these seem like fair guesses, bearing in mind I'm being careful not to have him chasing me in a couple of years time remindning me about my "guess"?? Haha.

He'll probably not cover any real mileage in it, he's just wanting a nice car to have and get out his system for a year or two, and as such, I'm fairly confident it'll have less than 10k miles on it in 2 years.

I've been thinking that as the V10 becomes more attainable, this will have a knock on effect on the values of the V8s. Would that be a fair comment??

Any advice or opinions welcome! Cheers.

Sounds reasonable enough. Especially since he's buying at dealer prices and will be selling privately/SOR/trade-in.

I would suggest moving this to the Audi/VW forum for more informed answers.

Sounds like a fair guess.

I'm not sure what's going to happen to the V10s, they're a much better car in pretty much every way and with the limited sales, I'm not sure they'll drop low enough to hurt the V8s.

Tell your friend to never drive the V10.

Sounds a reasonable price, cheapest, oldest, highest mileage R8's are advertised at 45k, not sure what they actually change hands for but it doesnt seem over priced, very colour and spec dependant, suspect 10K depreciation isnt too wide of the mark, they will never drop to being really cheap, cant see them ever going under about 25k.

The V10 does affect it but realistically how fast do you need to go, the V8 still looks and sounds fantastic and is still massively quick by anyones standards, still in the Supercar will waving competition 430 bhp might not cut it anymore, on the road I suspect it is still more than enough, I managed to get to work with only 211 bhp today and there were some small hills, howI climbed them with such paltry power I dont know, we need to on here separate reality from Top Trumps....

Only 211 BHP!!?? Quite how you managed is beyond me!? Lol. wink

Off topic, it is amazing how cars have came on power wise.

I wasn't really reffering to the power of the V10 over the V8, just that usually everyone's perception of a car/model/version changes when the "better" one becomes more affordable.

I've advised him about potential difficulties come sale time, but he's un phased by this. I'm thinking that this nice, gotta have for a year car might turn into a longer termer! If he is stuck in the old trade circle come sale time if he can't sell it private, he's going to move up!

I see the v8 and the v10 as too far apart to significantly influence each other's prices - my guess is that they'll gradually drift down fairly independently, based on their own individual market dynamics. They're rare enough and desirable enough that they've held their value fairly well; and they're expensive enough that their value is unlikely to be affected too much by external pressures such as car tax rises, or rising petrol prices.

Assuming it cost ~£83k originally, it has lost £25k (or 30% of its value) in ~2 - 2.5 years (+/- dealer premiums). Assuming nothing wildly unforeseen happens, you've probably already given him a fairly decent estimate, if anything maybe very slightly on the pessimistic side.
