I need to be educated about tyres, as I know next to nothing about them.

I have only had to put tyres on 2 cars, and I put Vredstiens (sp?) on my Astra and Braums (sp?) on my Mondeo (mk3). Both were brilliant, but no research at all went into them. The Astras tyres came from my Dad's recommendation and the Mondeo got them because they were on offer at the local tyre place.

Now, I desperately need to get these Pirelli P6000s off my 328i. They are honestly the worst tyre I have ever experienced - plenty of tread left, but the back of the car will kick out on wet roundabouts and no speed / revs at all (easy to control, and quite fun in the right place / time, but NOT what I want) and the traction control light occasionally flickers at me when I accelerate hard in most conditions.

They need to go!

Now, what tyres should I buy? I don't particularly want to spend more than £75 per corner if at all possible. They are 205 55R 16 tyres on the car as it sits.

Also, where should I buy them from? I have heard of Blackcircles and they seem good, and Costco do tyres as well and I do have a membership. Or does anyone know anywhere in Aberdeen or Inverness that have any good deals on at the moment?

Any advice at all would be much appreciated smile

Costco - michelin

Are the pressures correct on the P6000's?

Years and years ago I used to run an E36 and I always used to put P6000s on it. I loved 'em and they were £52 each.

Before you change your tyres, have you checked out your suspension thoroughly? BMWs are good at wearing their rear trailing arm bushes which might contribute to your wayward handling. There are other factors too.

I'm willing to entertain the notion that tyre technology has moved on in a decade and so would be tempted to recommend Kumhos as a cheap option and Goodyear Eagle NCT5s as what I would choose myself. Blackcirles has those at £73 each.

Continental Sport Contacts, Goodyear Excellence & Eagle NCT5 all come in that fitment, and I've run them all over the years. Goodyears are my personal preference, loved the old GSD3s they did, but the NCT5s are pretty good also.

I have checked the pressures and they are all correct, and the car handles fine in the dry, but the levels of grip are not progressive at all which I put down to the tyres.

Do you think it is worth getting it checked out at a local garage? Got a few German car specialists up in Aberdeen.

Fallen fk452, I had these on a golf a few years ago, very good tyres and shouldn't be far off your £75 budget.

I tend to favor Pirelli, Michelin or Bridgestones. Currently, I've got Pirelli Rosso all round, not sure you would get these for £75, mine cost me £115 each size 225/40/17

Costco have got 20% off 4 fitted starting on 11th.

You'd be hard pressed to find cheaper than that.

Black Circles will do you a couple of Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres for £10 or so more than your desired limit but these are an absolutely cracking tyre. Otherwise there are a plethora of 'premium' make tyres all around £75 in that size - take your pick, they're all pretty good. Order/pay from BCs over the internet and choose a fitter close to home to do the necessary and a date. There are a multitude of on-line tyre retailers to choose from as well as BCs and all operate in a very similar manner with very similar prices.

10 points for the use of "plethora" and a further five for the use of "multitude" as a textural synonym. biggrin

Is that all of the Costco branches, or just a few of them? That would be great!

Thanks for the replies, I will see what Costco come up with and then go to Blackcircles if it is not what I need smile

I have 4 pirelli p6000's on my car and am very happy with them, they are oem. I would check tracking, bushes and tyre pressures before getting rid.

Tracking is fine I think as the tyre wear is very even and the steering wheel is straight, and the pressures are all correct too.

I think one of the rear bushes is slightly deteriorated, but my mk3 Mondeo was the same and I had no problems with it.

It is also the fact that is looses grip while accelerating in the midrange - I know it is a 2.8 but it shouldn't be doing that, should it? I have heard a lot of bad things about the P6000s so surely it would make sense that the tyres are causing my problems?

P6000's are awful. I don't know why, maybe they go 'off' after just a few months or maybe they are just dreadful to begin with.

The PS3 recommended above would be my recommendation. Remember its not just about price but also about how long they last (so you don't have to replace them as often). The Michelins tend to offer very good grip and still last a long time (some plastic tyres last longer but they have no grip).

Bang on the money.
My PS3's on the rear have passed 35k miles now and stil have 5mm of tread left. I drive fast I has to be said too so no nannying out the miles. Every set I've had have lasted huge distances and are superb in the wet

Avon ZV5 are about £75 each for that size, I had two fitted to my daily in April and I'm impressed so far. Mind you, they only replaced some lethal (and noisy) Wanli Ditchfinders biggrin
