Hi All

Have bought a 4x4 which I love but the last owner really went to town modding it up, especially with tuning and exhaust mods.

I want to tone down the louds noise a bit, so would please like some advice which I should go for.

1)It has a tip on the exhaust, 2)a massive K&N cone filter system. 3)The exhaust system is a straight through stainless system (the middle and rear box have been taken out).

I want to retain some of the sporty noise but of the list above, which is the biggest culprit noise-wise, the filter or the straight through system?

Many thanks for your help.

Straight through system.

I don't know why you'd want a loud 4x4, what kind of car is it? I'd put something with a small-ish centre box and a large backbox on, for a sporty tone without too much volume. More than likely the K&N, despite sounding good, will be giving you heatsoak in traffic and dulling your throttle response too (not an issue so much if it's a turbo car).

It is a Ssangyong Musso 2.9 TD. I dont really want the noise, am more interested in it doing the job it was designed for and to have loads of space

Jesus, it must sound like a tractor. I'd just get a standard exhaust on it if you can find one, or just get a custom-made catback, might work out cheaper than a new OEM if you can't get a used one. Add some big silencer boxes in with plenty of baffles, and a standard airbox would quiet the induction down. After all that, you'd probably need a reflash of the ECU to restore the original map, as the car would be running with less air and more exhaust restriction than it wants to have, so might compensate in less than desirable ways.

Why oh why would anyone blow their cash tuning a diesel Ssangyong?

It does sound like a really powerful monster truck, it has been tuned so has this really aggressive growl and some kind of after noise like an echo. When i drove it home my partner said she could hear me coming down the road.

Other than the noise issue and the fact it has been raised to an inch of its life on Land Rover Discovery V8 springs I really like it a lot, it looks cool and is lovely to drive and runs like a dream at motorway speed and plus its a wonderful 4x4 with the Merc engine and chassis.

Thanks a lot for the advice, I really appreciate it :-)
