Help to identify part please.

A mate has just come round asking me to identify a part on his 2002 Vectra diesel. I have no idea what it is. Can anybody assist please?

The bit we are interested in is the silver thing with cooling fins.....

Looks like a CPU cooler you'd find in a PC.

I think It's a ballast resistor. Don't know what it's for thought!

Using the terms "ballast resistor" or "rectifier" doesn't come up with any pics of the part according to google.

It has one terminal block underneath, and it's hooked onto the side of the battery box if that helps?
