Mk1 Focus ST3 or Civic Type r Mk2?
Discussion
Hello all, my brother is after a 'new' car and likes either the Focus ST3 (mk 1) or the Civic Type R (Mk2). He does not want to pay more than about £6500 for either. I am thinking the Focus ST will be better, as you appear to get more car for your money (In fact can not believe how low in prace they have come!), however they are a bit thirstier on fuel than the Type R.
So, peoples thoughts on what one he should go for?
Thanks
Lee

I assume with the price you mean the mk2 focus st3 with 225bhp opposed to the mk1 st170?
Would be the turbo'd ford for me, the heated Recaro leather seats are brilliant, being a Focus it is still practical as a family car, my dad owns one, managed to get a tent and have a family of 4 go camping for 5days so ample boot storage. Tuning options available if he wanted to take that route, a bluefin around 300gbp would take power upto 260bhp i think
Performance Blue comes up a treat with some elbow grease!

On the fuel front yes they are more thirsty than the civic I get around 22mpg just around town driving, but lots of members on focusstoc have seen 30mpg and more on longer motorway journeys. But of course if you thrash it everywhere you can see 15mpg!!!!

If the budget is 6500, surely the Civic is the FN2, not an EP3? (there are several 07 reg FN2s for sale on autotrader just now for under 6.5K)
Actually not sure which Id pick myself. Focus is clearly the faster car and most easy to live with, but they are thirsty and I quite like the Civic's mix of manic revving power delivery and (in FN2 guise) the huge 485 litre boot, meaning it can be an only car if necessary!

Really, whys that? They have identical power to weight figures, and there both 3 door hatches of popular family hatchbacks, what not easy to live with about a CTR?Actually not sure which Id pick myself. Like people say completely different. Test drive both. I had an CTR FN2 which I assume is within budget.
Okay the rear end isn't mobile at 10/10th but very sharp handling and it's very stable and predictable when pressing on. More fun than a wallowy 330ci I had a test drive of IMO. And then of course is the engine and drivechain...
40mpg is possible, but expect nearer 25mpg with lots of VTEC'ing. Like I did

I wanted a DC5 rather than my Focus but being 23 when I bought the ST, the insurance as double on a DC5. A decent DC5 seems to still be nearer £9k.
Shouldn't be that much, should be nearer 7k for a decent one with 60k ish miles.Id of valued mine in a private sale at about 8k, it had 53k, and the usual mods of Airbox, nice jap catback, and it was generally in very good nic.
They have dropped a lot in price in the last 12 months.

I've owned both although facelift Ford Focus ST (09) and Honda Civic Type R (FN2). Both used as daily drivers.
As said, very different cars.
Civic Type R has more of a "hot hatch" feel imo. It handles better but the suspension is VERY hard and has no compliance. Engine needs revving hard but is good when in the VTEC range. Seats are excellent. Average 30 MPGish. Build quality is good but watch for rusting doors under the seal at the top and rattling dashboards.
Bad points; ride quality. Rock hard. Rear visibility is poor. Paint chips very easily. Feels like quite a big car (it is). Lost the hot hatch feel of the EP3. It shouldn't have been called a Type R in my opinion.
Focus ST is more of a "GT". Handles well, good grip but a bit wallowy. Engine is very torquey. Great noise. I much prefer the styling. Easily tuneable if that's your thing. Quick(ish) mid range and pulls like a train once you're moving. Very comfortable.
Bad points; MPG. I averaged about 22 MPG. You'll only get anywhere near 30 MPG on the motorway. Build quality isn't as good as Honda but I had zero problems with mine.
Depends what you're looking for in a car. They are very different. I much preferred the Focus.
