Private plate retention.

Was going to search for this but the PH search is down.
A quick question, I have a private plate i bought in september 2011. got it for cheap but never got around to putting on any of my cars. (as i keep changing them).
To be honest i forgot i had it. While going through my junk today i found the plates along with the v778. i'm a complete novice when it comes to stuff like this by the way. On the v778 it states the plate must be assigned to a vehicle by 19 05 2012. After doing some research i've read the apparantley the DVLA will send you a reminder in the post to say the date is coming up. I have not recieved one letter from the DVLA stating this.
Now where do i stand as of now. i still want to keep the plate as i yet to have a car to assign it to.
