dont laugh, but i am looking to buy a supra
Discussion
I have always wanted a toyota supra for long as i can remember. now I can finally afford to get one.
Are these cars worth the buy? tbh im conpletely clueless what kind of deal I would be getting and really what to look out for. I have done lots of research to do the basic checks for any knocks, underseal, turbos etc.

I'm in the same boat as you, wanted one since the days of playing Gran Turismo 1. Assume you're looking at the MKIV?
I've only done a bit of research into them, but I was surprised at how heavy they were. 1500kg, vs. around 1280kg for a classic Impreza. With that in mind, I'm not sure the NA version would 'feel' fast, especially compared to the Turbo shove.
Some info about LSDs, which I'd definitely want here: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?241932...

Gaz (a mod) had one. They always seem to rate them highly, so hopefully he'll join in with some good advice. Are these cars worth the buy? tbh im conpletely clueless what kind of deal I would be getting and really what to look out for. I think the biggest pitfall when buying these is trying to avoid the awful looking chavved up Fast and the Furious body kitted ones. They look so much better standard.

Totally agree with you on this lol.Im looking for a plain one, no kit and very little modded, hopefully i will be able to find a plain looking classic supra TT. they look to immature all kitted up for my liking, but each to there own thats just my opinion.

If you want a really nice one, you can get a fresh import from Japan:Im looking for a plain one, no kit and very little modded, hopefully i will be able to find a plain looking classic supra TT. they look to immature all kitted up for my liking, but each to there own thats just my opinion.

The price is fairly high though, especially compared to a private sale.
I had a mk3 NA. Man that car was slow! Thirsty too. People used to say things like 'bet it goes like a rocket' and I wouldn't say a lot as it really didn't, even though the 3 litre supposedly has 200bhp iirc. However the turbo charged ones are no doubt a lot quicker. Don't get an NA!
I should have put money on someone mentioning the Fast and Furious film & Chavs within the first couple of posts!
I assume the OP is talking about the mk3 the 1992-2002 era model? In which case look at http://www.mkivsupra.net/
The standard NA version is circa 220hp in 1450kg yet with the manual gearbox isn't too slow at all, it should crack 60mph in 6.5-7sec and be capable of a mid/late 14s 1/4 mile.
I know a couple of people who have had supra mk3 and mk4 models in NA and Turbo form and dare I say it they have been ridiculously reliable until the twin turbos are circa 500hp!
The turbo model is a right animal, the 280hp that Toyota quote from factory sounds tame but they do go far better than eg similar 280hp imprezas and ought to be hitting 60mph in 5sec and 13s 1/4s.
With only a few tweeks 320-350hp seems to be about right. Beyond that your budget is the limit. A friend runs a circa 500hp TT version and that is phenomenal, literally capable of super bike speeds but that has had some serious investment.

Engine is bullet proof apparently. No need to change engine internals until you're looking at very serious (500+ HP) upgrades.
Standard trim RZ was 330hp out of factory AFAIK, and not the gentleman's agreed 276hp (no manufacturer stuck to that!)
Also quicker than the Ferrari 348TB back in the day, something Toyota was very proud of.

IMO this is one of the few cars that can pull off a bodykit, albeit a subtle one.Edit: "off" instead of "of"

some great info chaps many thanks.
I did look at jm-imports and your right the prices do seem to be very costly. i am looking at nothing less than the TT Mkiv, dont really see the point in getting half a cake when I can eat a whole one for a few more notes.
I am very enthusiastic about learning technically about cars now that I can afford a good one.
i have recently discovered when it comes to buying a car like this that you have to really know a bit about cars from a technical view.

I owned a 5 Speed Manual Mk4 SZ (non turbo) and after 5 months into ownership I was starting to look at the RZ Twin Turbo model. I had the RZ for around a year it was a fantastic cruiser but wasn't that brilliant on B roads and lacked a lot of steering feel you might as well be sat on a playstation. The other issue with it was there was very little sense of speed (probably due to the large window) and you could find your self going way faster than the speed limit in no time at all.
What it did do well at was the engine, for £500 you can get the engine from 320bhp to around 380 - 400bhp, the engines in both of them never skipped a beat. The owner clubs were good fun places to be and they sound great.
I personally wouldnt even bother looking at the SZ it puts out around 200bhp (some horses are going to have gone missing) and weighs in at 1458kg thats 137bhp per ton most hot hatchs have more than that and will handle a lot better too.

I don't know but about these but they seem an interesting option. A few auto's out there but they seem like a waste of time to me.
Looking at the classified they seem to be around £3k+ for an NA manual and £6k+ for a TT manual, seems like quite strong money given the age of them now. They must be a good drive and sought after as there's quite a few other performance car options at those prices.

A standard spec, UK 6-speed manual turbo car is still a fantastic looking machine.
It's a car that I regret not trying some years back, however I tried an E36 M3 and was hooked.
I still like the styling, the simple layout, and the scale (especially for a Jap car!).
Good cars are likely to be increasingly rare though.
