Sort of What Car? , I like Vauxhall Signum
Discussion
So I'm after a replacement car,
I have £2k to spend, need something reasonable on fuel so approx 2.0L or there about.
Mainly use the car to drive to and from the office, 12 mile round trip mainly in traffic.
So in my search The Vauxhall Signum looks like good Value, miles / year wise plus i quite like the look of them. Anyone got or had one and care to share experiences?
Also any other suggestions ?
Needs to be 4/5 door, similar size to the above?

Just had a browse of the classifieds looking at Estates under £2k... (new Classfieds makes searching a doddle)
Liking the look of these...

Looked at a 2.0T one of these at a local dealer - it was a shed - but that was the dealer - not the car!
What limited resreach I did on them, made me fancy one more... Like it is actually only a 4 seater in reality, with a smaller middle rear seat for small people - normally it is down and used as a table, with storage - very highly specced, in all forms, standard sat nav and parking sensors for instance. I liked the Design model, basically a bit sportier, exposed twin tail pipe on the 2.0T, not hidden as on the Elegance... Not many about, a bit different... which I like! (Hence why I drive a Legacy GT and not and Impreza wagon!)
I would avoid the 2.2 from what I have read, although they are cam chains and not belt - high pressure fuel pumps may be problamatic (and VERY expensive)and the 3.2 will be thirsty, so the 2.0T is where I would be..

My friend has one so I've passengered in one many times and to be fair it's generally a fight over who sits in the back!
Absolutely loads of room in the back and even though Clarkson done his piece on it being a car for a passenger..... I would agree that it is the place to be!
Seems to have decent load space in the rear as well, and I agree that they do look ok for a large car.
My mate has had a few problems with glow plugs (diesel) and his Traction Control light is on from a broken abs sensor....other than that I don't think he's had too many problems.

Reedy and ikarl, thanks for the input. I think on my budget I'll be looking at the 2.2 petrol on the signum.
As for other suggestions I don't really need an estate, just prefer the look of the signum to the vectra for example,
SAAB are out as not a fan of them, although i realise they are good value.
Alfa is a good shout, but few and far between for a good one.
Keep the info, ideas coming

Seriously tempted to take a look at that Alfa myself
Just serviced with new brakes - reputable dealer
Manual
Good colour
Leather
Pirelli Tyres - not just any old rubbish you usually find on a sub £2k car
Ticks lots of boxes
But I don't need another car, so I won't

Nope but i have a 15 month old baby,so need some room for associated baby stuff. mostly just me in the car but not always
Is the Signum a 4 seater? I seem to recall something like this. As in it hasn't got a rear middle seat. Might be an issue if you want to get 4 people and baby seat in.Apart from that I don't see it's not as viable an option as any other car in this sector.

5 seater, but really yhe middle seat is useless for real people, should be fine for baby seat if needed, but if i'm going somewhere with other adults its to the pub and i don't need the car for that Apart from that I don't see it's not as viable an option as any other car in this sector.

My mistake. Although I new there was something different about it:

Instead of a traditional three-passenger bench seat, the Signum has two separate seats in the rear, which can be adjusted in many ways, including sliding back and forth (just like the front seats) and reclining backrests. There is also a very narrow central section, which includes a folding armrest and can also serve as a third seat (the Signum is fitted with three rear headrests and safety belts)
Had mine for 5 years now, in that time we've had two children and it's coped fine. The boot can sometimes frustrate, it's smaller than on the Vectra, but we always manage.
I actually thought about selling mine earlier this year, but nothing newer in my price range, even came close.
Go for a Design model, it's broadly equivalent to the Vectra SRi model, but with a few more extras, like part leather, auto wipers and dimming mirrors, Sat Nav and if you're lucky, the travel assistant, which is a coolbox between the rear seats.

I had one as a company car for a short time and found it the most pointless car I've ever had.
The boot is not as large as you would expect and we often found a weeks shopping meant having stuff on the back seat as well as in the boot. With the seats folded it made a mini-estate, though.
In the driver's seat, the dashboard, view, controls and even the seat are all pure Vectra, as is the drive.
The back seat is for two passengers, because the centre seat is not a real seat - we only ever used that once and the 12-year old moaned so much after just 10 miles in it that we never considered it a 5-seater again.
There is loads of rear legroom, but you get exactly the same in a Vectra estate and that is what I changed to. Not exciting but more practical and - to my eye at least, better looking.
