I know there are several threads on this, but PH search is pretty weak, so I can't find them. Feel free to link me to existing threads...

Otherwise, can anyone recommend me some manufacturers of some decent quality, but fairly discreet looking head units. So far have Becker, Nakamichi, on the list.

Thanks!

There isn't much point in taking a car headunit to the n-th degree for quality as a car is a horrible environment to listen to music.

Go for a trusted make that gets solid reviews and couple to good speakers. You'll be fine.

I'm not going to be spending £2000 on a brand new head unit.

Seems that less than £100 gets you pretty much anything you care to think of if you buy used, so I thought I may as well get something decent, maybe with some resale value built in too. Would also like something that isn't covered in shiny silver bits and a million tiny buttons, which seems to limit to either OE, or higher end stuff.

I've always been a fan of Pioneer equipment.

One of the most 'musical' units I had was the DEHP77MP. It's an older unit now, but the sound quality is superb. You should be able to pick one up cheaply, too.

Becker is also a good choice for SQ over function.
