My van is broken down near Dumfries. I've got a hire van to do what I need to do in the area, but it needs to be back by 5pm today.

I need to be home in Cheltenham tonight, but trains are looking a bit tight. I'm thinking about buying a cheap snotter for the trip, and selling it when I come back to collect the van next week.

I'm looking for anything with at least a week's MOT and tax until the end of June, that will do 5-600 miles without breaking down, within a couple of miles of Dumfries. I'd like not to lose more than a couple of hundred quid on the week.

Over to you....

If you're prepared to lose a couple of hundred quick, wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to hire a car? Some do weekly deals for less than £100 a week, okay it'll only be something small like a C1 but it'll get you to where you want to be.

You could be right, but Enterprise in Dumfries don't seem to have much available, and it's a bit more interesting this way.

My van's in Beattock, which is a dear taxi ride from Dumfries. The plan is to drop the hire van in Dumfries, buy something like the 106, then offer it to the garage in Beattock for a few quid off the bill for the head gasket.

106 is the winner so far. I have to go to Darlington and Durham now, then back to Dumfries. Time's going to limit my options, I think.

The challenge is off! Enterprise have dug something out, as suggested in the second post. Cheaper than the train fare, too.
