I'm starting to come to the view that my days in 2 seaters are over (for now). A growing family means I'm just not using my 'weekend' car enough. Every time I want to go somewhere, I realise I have at least 2 passengers...

So, in my time, I've owned (and loved) a TVR Chimaera, A Caterham 7 and currently an Elise (amongst other things).

Now I need something that will fit the kids in (4&7 fwiw), but still provide thrills.

I'm thinking along the lines that the car will probably lack driving thrills (comparatively), so it needs to make up the deficit in aural thrills. 6 cylinders plus then?

budget is about the £20k mark, but I dont mind spending less!

thoughts?

cheers...

I was scratching my head about this the other day.

Not sure if the rear seats in an XKR would do it (I think you could only get tiny kids in there). Same for 996/997.

So maybe your're into more mainstream-based stuff like Audi S4/RS4, C55/CLK 55, M3/M5, etc?

All of those with would have a bit more space in the rear - inc the two door version/cabs where applicable

Unless either the new XK is better or both you and your other half are not particularly short you can discount the jag XK. I went from a TVR to an XKR when the little one arrived and he can fit behind my wife but only if she has the seat a little further forward than normal and there is no room behind me.

RX8 is about he most practical 2+2 I can think of but not exactly a 6 or 8 cylinder motor.

911 will suffice. The rear seats in the soft-top are more upright but still comfy enough. My family car was a 911 from when I was 6-16 and I coped fine with it.

I'm not an expert, so not sure about rear legroom, but I would be looking at TVR Cerberas for that money.

A touch bigger than a Cerb would be a Maserati 4200.

Just do some PH logic to justify a car with tiny back seats. By the time the kids don't fit, they won't want to be going out with mum and dad any more anyway smile

A good S2 would fit within a quarter of your budget.

A good Turbo would be a bit more than that, but still a lot less than half. And you could spend the extra on making it go (a lot) faster.

And you would in no way be compromising on driving pleasure.

I'd say the rear seats of a Cerb would be big enough for people 5' or under really, unless it's for short journeys.

Is that Goosey's overpriced Turbo? Im looking for a set of Gullideckels like those for my 1988 Turbo.

Id suggest a 968 Sport. Its a 968 Club Sport without the gullible bandwagon tax and theyre superb.

Im 6'3" and I weigh 17 stones and can sit in the back of any 924/944/968 with relative ease and theres more room in a Sport ( for your bottom, as only the base of the seat area is padded with the sides being carpeted).

A 944 Turbo is a far better weekend car than a 944S2, although the S2 is a much better daily driver (especially through town). That said a nice late 968 Sport would probably make a better buy and its significantly better than an S2, despite being mechanically similar...
