Hi

Just trying to make a decision on the following and would value the opinion of PH collective wisdom. I bought a 2008 118d ES Edition with 74k (now 84k) last November from auction and whilst it is a nice car to own/drive I am worried about future depreciation and potential for mechanical issues if I keep piling on the miles (I do around 20-25k pa). The 1-series have a few known problems (timing chains snapping are not uncommon on this year of engine) so I took out a BMW comprehensive warranty which is £50 a month but I have already had about £1500 worth of work done through the warranty/goodwill so it was probably a good move (new clutch under goodwill included). Obviously its value is going to drop when I start to go over the 100k (I know this is psychological for some people) and I have the ongoing cost of the warranty but this is balanced by 50mpg and £30 RFL).

I have just been offered a 2006 1.6 Mini with 34k from the owner of the OH's company - its his daughters car which was run through the company - I can buy this for about £400 under trade money and run it fairly cheaply, so would it be sensible to sell the BMW now (and get my all my money back) and run the Mini for a few years and probably not lose anything? I know its all subjective, and whilst the BMW is a nice car to own if I bought the Mini it would allow me to buy something like a Porsche 924 (I owned one years ago) or a Jaguar XJ8 308 for the weekend (I miss tinkering).

Any thoughts? (sorry for the rambling post).
