i bought a renault megane scenic 1.5 dci smile, it has no road tax, or road tax disc

if i put road tax on it through the direct govt website, i am allowed to drive before they post the road tax disc to me, or can i drive as soon as im done paying for it

If you do it on line the disc will go to the previous owners address as the log book won't be processed into your name yet, just nip to the post office with insurance and new keeper slip.

I used to think that you get a few days grace to sort out tax on newly purchased vehicles, I'm not sure now but I remember post office wouldn't tax cars without the full v5

PO will tax cars with the new keeper slip within 2 months of purchase.

And yes, it's illegal to drive a car with no tax disc, even if the car is taxed.

Has the previous owner sent the tax disc back for a refund? if so, as per other comments, get to the post office and renew

Yes, just take your new keepers slip and insurance certificate.

As for open post offices, there are a few that open on a Sunday, mainly the ones that are part of a supermarket (ASDA Skelmersdale for example)

Yes, failure to display a valid disc is an offence and will trigger a fixed penalty ticket.

Obviously if the number plate is read by ANPR, as opposed to someone looking at your windscreen for a disc, the car will come up "good".
