The back box of my old Civic fell off again, which pissed me off no end. This made me bite the bullet and get a new car.

I want to sell the civic now if I can but the wife says to stick it in the paper as it is and look to sell it without fixing it. What chance do I have of selling it like this?

Should I fix the exhaust and try and sell it that way?

Mod note: It looks like a cheeky ad with the details.

If it actually needs a new back-box, I'd probably just scrap it. Steel prices are quite high at the moment and it saves a lot of hassle. I can't see most people in the market for a £400 car wanting to buy one which needs a 200 quid part to get it road-worthy.

Alternatively break it and sell the parts on ebay.

I think I have to agree with the above as well, having been in a similar situation with a MK2 golf a few years back. After spending best part of £300 - probably what the car was worth - getting various things fixed just for something else to fail I decided to get it scrapped. Personally I just couldn't face the hassle of selling it in the state it was in. It's always sad to see a car on the back of a low loader of to the scrappy, but sometimes a car just reaches the end of it's useful life and it sounds like yours may have done that. frown

It's an offence to sell an unroadworthy vehicle as per this link (it should go to a pdf) although by the description (page 5 and 6) a borked exhaust might not be a problem.

What utter crap!

A backbox should be dirt cheap for a pattern part, if not just stick it on eBay, or in the local rag for free.

It's an offence to sell a dangerous car without alerting the buyer. I don't think a missing exhaust box counts as dangerous. smile

Saying it's an offence to sell an unroadworthy vehicle, thousands get sold every day! It only becomes a problem if the seller is claiming it is roadworthy.

Hey, complain to the CAB, it's their document. Murder happens everyday, doesn't make it legal.

It's not an offence to supply an unroadworthy vehicle if you have reasonable cause to believe that it'll be made roadworthy before it's driven on the road.

Hmm I didnt mean it to look like an add. I just wanted to add some context. It could have been a mint VTi worth £4000 or whatever. Sorry.

I didnt even think of ebay. Thanks. I will give the local scrapyard a call tomorrow and see what they have to say.

My grandfather was selling a van once and while the guy who had come to see it was test driving it the exhaust fell off. He didn't notice and bought the van anyway. True story

No problem, but "it's a £400 Civic" covers it. smile

The back box in my £400 Polo went last week.

A quick search on the internet and i found a local motorfactor doing brand new back boxes including u clamp for £21.

Got the box delivered 2 hours later, then 20 minutes of my own time with a trolley jack, 13mm Spanner, Hammer and some Firegum and bob's your uncle. Job done for a total of £25

You either sell it for 'spares or repairs' pointing out that it needs a back box ; obtain a cheap pattern part from a factor ; or go to the scrappy and get a used exhaust for less than the pattern one , just to flog the car .

I aquired the middle and back parts of an exhaust for an early Maestro from a local motor factor for £42 3 years ago - Honda exhaust parts must be cheaper than this, surely? Fitted them in an afternoon, though this is the worst job EVAH on a car in my view frown ... (Sticking pins in my eyes cloud9 is my preferred option when asked [required rolleyes ] to replace an exhaust system yuck ...)

I kinda get the feeling that this thread is a potential battle between "can I sell a car with no back box, more fool the buyer" & "I was sold a car that turned out to have no back box", but it's only a gut feeling confused ?

Thanks for the Ebay suggestion here. Not sure why I didn’t think about it. It sold for £300, which isn’t too bad.

I got loads of interest. They guy who picked it up said he's had 7 in the past and he was going to stick a vti engine in it. He was also nice enough to bring his lady friend to enjoy the 2 hour drive home with not back box and the inside stinking of fumes. hehe
